Okay, you guys have mentioned supercharging: the whipple

But I can't find any superchargers for 911. If anyone has a link, let me know. (I must be on the 220HP sucks ass rag today).

Don't get me wrong, the additional HP I got from the chip and stuff has been great. But the "electric supercharger" that adds 10hp definitely doesn't give me a woody. I want 30 or 40 bolt-on supercharged HP.

Juan: How is your 3.2 for driving daily now? Do you use it on weekends only or drive it everywhere?
Have you noticed anything different about how it drives?
Also, are you happy with the HP that you have now and is it worth the money?

Kurt i travel a lot but i been home for 6 weeks and i drive it everyday, even if i have to make an excuse to go out of the house,I have log 855 miles on her since the turbo, last nite i drove her to the Drag Track, which is a 50 minute drive, as i drive her just crusing at 80MPH,at 3200 RPM,and she just love it,for the money i can seem to find a better deal and even that i know the direction i will go i still lookig for others set-ups just to compare, the way she drives is the same but if you are crusing at 80 MPH in 5 gear, down to 4 and shes ready for action that quick.

Kurt - the SOK systems will give you 100+ HP. The whipplecharger system for the 3.0 SC is ~$7000 installed. I have not seen the Carrera setup but have some seat time with the 3.0 SC application. It's no BS - 260 dynoed HP to the rear wheels on a '78. The torque curve is flat and strong from off idle to redline. This car was run hard all of the time and is still going strong. The P.O. got carried away at first and put the hurts on the engine a couple of times. With the boost now tied down to 0.8 bar all is well.
The fellow Juan is referring to is building a custom system based on a 3.2 SC buildup. He is using an Eaton supercharger on a Carrera intake with Haltech engine management.
I am still researching the proper unit to use for my 3.3T engine. The motor should be ready soon so I am anxious to get to the really fun part - engineering!

Paul Weir (paulweir.com)also sells Wipple and Paxton on his site.

I have to say I like the supercharger. I have a supercharged Pontiac as an everyday driver. The instant boost when you stomp on the go pedal is something I wish my 930 had.

As a side note a freind of mine owns an after market shop for trucks. He installs about three superchargers per month and will only put in the Paxton units. He put in some Wipples (a much cleaner installation) and finds they don't perform as well a the Paxton units.

Thanks Todd, but let me get this straight, you're complaining about your Turbo?!
I only wish I could sit around saying, "Damn I sure wish my turbo kicked in faster...."

The first upgrade most folks do to a 930 involves reduction of lag, usually by swapping out the turbo. It is quite true that you must take power to make power with a supercharger, but it is INSTANT power. This gives you back the driveability that most desire in a street car.

Todd - please elaborate on why your friend prefers the Paxton over the Whipple. The Paxton unit shares a similar design "flaw" with the turbo, which is lag. This "flaw" also is a strength when it comes to the longevity of parts. The Whipple's instant torque can tear things up in a hurry if abused. Is this what he is referring to?

Hi Kurt
I have been toying with Turbo/Superchargers for a while.
I have ridden in Juans and can say without a doubt I was far more impressed with his setup than a '79 930 I test drove 6 months ago!.
It is very drivable and sounds Bad ass!.
The only thing I would add and am sure Juan is itching to add is the intercooler!.
My only concern with a whipple supercharger would be our old 915 trannys which may suffer with that instant power and may run better with some turbo lag!?.
The only thing which is holding me back is the resale of the car as I am likely to sell in 4-5yrs time when i have to relocate.
(But I will buy something newer when I do - a 993 perhaps!)
I am still wacthing all these "power threads"
with interest!.

Rarly

His comments are based on the durability of the units. On the V8 Whipple sits on top (hence the cleaner installation) of the intake manifold and is more compact. He feels the internal components are smaller and more prone to wear. In heavy duty use he found the Paxton to be more reliable than the Wipple units.

You have to remember the application is Trucks and Suburbans most used to haul trailers. How many of us would supercharge a 454ci on a daily driver....this group is most likely the wrong one to ask.

His comments on engine performance:

The Paxton can pump more mass per revolution of the turbine and generates more torque at the low end (again, great when hauling a trailer)

The Whipple does not give the same power band and is more "peaky".

From a style and simplicity of installation on a V8, he still admits the Whipple is a better choice.

He still wants to do my wife's Suburban at cost...she won't let him because it's " to loud with the supercharger and free flow exhaust. First I told her that was why we had to upgrade the stereo, to drown out the noise. Then I decide if I don't put the money in her car it can go in the Porsche heh..heh..heh. She just though I was agreed with her for the first time when it came to performance upgrades.

I decided to go the supercharger route. I am using an Eaton 62 for my application. I did not find anyone doing what I had in mind so I am doing everything myself. You can check out my project at:
