Shipping tires & wheels - anyone know how?

I need to get 4 tires mounted on wheels shipped to me. Does anyone know the most economical way to do it? There's no Amtrak station at the p/u location, so I think I'm limited to UPS or a trucking company. Will they ship the tires and wheels without being packaged?

Thanks for any tips! (Wish I could tell you I found the C2 Turbo wheels I've been searching for, but its Brabus wheels for the girlfriend's ML320 )

Tire Rack ships tires unpackaged, lashed two together with plastic ties. I've also seen Fuchs wheels shipped as is, with a lable stuck on the inside of the rim, and plenty of racer's tape (or gaffer's tape -- or heavy duct tape, depending on what you call it) on all the rim edges and applied flat over the spokes.

With the tires already mounted, you could probably ship each one seperately, with a cardboard circle afixed to the rims for protection, and then wrap the whole thing in (lots of) Saran Wrap.

I'd check with your local UPS office for suggestions.

The best way I've seen is to cut out cardboard spheres and attach tape or strap them to both sides of the wheels and let em fly!!! I received my wheels with no damage!!

I've returned tires to Tirerack UPS. Call 1800 PICK UPS and they will come and pick them up at your house. You need to know the weight and approximate size, assuming you will be shipping these as two packages. As a side note, it actually cost me less to ship tires back to UPS then they charged me, and you know they are getting a discount. Just another way to make money.

Try Greyhound - they have a website which will calculate the cost for you. I've found them to be quick and cheap with big items.

I'd use UPS and package as Tire-Rack does. I've received many sets from Tire-Rack over the years with no problems. Each is a separate "package."

UPS now charges a few extra dollars for tires becuase they are a "hazrdous material" They also charge extra for anything not in a cardboard box. So it would be cheaper to fool UPS and put them in a box. They will accpet a box up to 130 inches length + 2x height + 2x width. They charge an oversize charge for a box close to this size but it is just the charge for a box of about 50lbs, your wheels and tires should weigh this much.

The last set of wheels and tires I received was a set of perfect Fuchs wheels and tires, and were sent out by Woodard(?) tires. They were wrapped in that saranwrap like plastic and all 4 were mounted on a pallet. This was sent by truck. I don't remember the exact cost, but I remember it was significantly cheaper than UPS- and they arrived in perfect shape
