Did Carrera series come with vinyl dash?
My '87 seems to have a vinyl dash, almost pvc like in hardness. Is this original? If this is a cover would the original be leather underneath?

Porsche stopped the production of the leather dash for the US, for a while in the 80's, after too many complaints and problems. AFAIK, Vinyl has always been a base level...at least for ROW models.

Can't speak to the leather/vinyl issue but if yours is hard like PVC, it just may be a cover. Careful inspection around the underside lip by the ends and gauges could tell. I'd hate to think someone glued one on a leather dash, but if they did and it wasn't trashed, it is now.

Movin,
I have a original dash on a 87 Carrera it is vinyl(Blue) they last better then the leather but watch for UV damage they will crack. If you pull out the windshield you can see if it is original but it souds as if it is. Regards TSheehan |

The standard dash for `87 was definitely the (hard) vinyl material.
Below are a few pics of the standard factory dash on a few previously owned 911's. So, if they look similar to what you have, then it's the almost certainly the original.  `89 cab:  `88 Targa(s):

If your dash is leather, there would be a stitched seam on top. My SC has a leather dash. I had read here that Porsche stopped making the leather dashes in 1984 due to the problems with warpping and shrinkage.
