How to compare apples?

With all the magazines and web sites selling similar products at varying prices I wonder if there are significiant differences between the products or are they the same items with different pricing strategies. For example:
Turbo tie rods
Turbo tails
Frozen vs. slotted vs. drilled rotors
P/C kits
Tensioner update kits
Rubber trim
Reproduction steel panels

How can you ensure Porsche standards without paying for Porsche part numbers?

I would think that the tensioner upgrade and tie rod stuff is all made by a reputable manufacturer (most probably the OEM). The tails, I wouldn't know about.. But I do not think that drilled rotors are worth a flip. Have heard good things about the frozen and gas-slotted ones.

One other thought... If you are looking at a particular brand(s), why don't you ask the board members for experiences!!

As far as the tensioner kits, I have been told that most are sold directly from the OEM manufacturer. I recently tried to order one and found that there is a 3-4 month back order at most places. Finally found one thru a wholesaler after looking for about 2 weeks.
