915 TRANSMISSION HELP!!!!!!

Okay here goes.....to pre-empt my question a little background is necessary: I recently drove the p-car from St. Louis to Kalamazoo (I relayed my adventure in an earlier post). During that trip I lost 3rd and 4th gears. I sent an e-mail to Warren asking for assistance and he replied (thank you BTW)with a diagram of the inspection cover and rods inside the transmission. I took the cover off and drained the gear oil. The oil was clean with only a very small amount of specks of metal shavings. Questions: 1. What am I supposed to be looking for? 2. Can I fix 3rd and 4th gears thru that port? 3. Once I do or when I get the cover back on where is the fill port for the new transmission gear oil? 4. Or am I truly SOL and should I just take it to a p-car mechanic and have him fix it?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Flanker,
I'm shure warren's just using the John right now, and will post an answer, but when you took that plate off--exposing the forks--Were they still in place? When my friends 915 lost gears like you, we found that the forks had jumped off!! This occured shortly after he had it towed-DOLLY STYLE-which is a big no no for porsche gear boxes. However, we found that out by experience.

Okay...upon further investigation....I had my wife sit in the driver seat and go thru the gears from 1st to reverse slowly. There is an approx. 3.5" piece attached to the shift rod that has a ball at one end. When I opened the port to look the ball was in a metal formed "cup". As she shifted thru the gears it stayed in the cup until she went to 5th whereby it came right out of the cup and now I cannot get it back in. Note: as she went form 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, nothing moved in the transmission. Why is that? Please excuse my lack of knowledge for the technical terms of the parts I'm trying to describe.

Any suggestions?

Tim

Well,

In the kitchen, actually ...

Since, I've only 'heard' about this problem from others, and not actually 'seen' it or fixed it myself ... I can't tell you what to look for.

But, since I have a spare 915 out in the garage ... I will drain the oil and take the cover off and attach my Automotion T-4300 shifter handle and go through the gears and take some digital pics ... so hang on! This will take a few hours!
