Another crappy silver Brazilian coil. It's absolutely amazing that Bosch puts its name on these POS.

Congrats on getting the problem fixed.

Scott,

Congrats on the not-so-easy repair!

Unfortunately, I don't believe Permatune repairs those old silver boxes any longer ...

Is your old Permatune box potted in epoxy? You will need to remove four long screws and the lid to find out ... there may also be evidence of the potting compound on the underside.

Sorry I wasn't on the board when this thread first appeared [major three week hospitalization and two month recovery period without Internet afterwards] ... but this problem's meadering resolution path is a clear case of why I recommend putting an engine on an ignition scope of the old Sun or Delco type where you see all six traces stacked on the screen. Apparent problems with ignition will be ruled out or zeroed in on, immediately! A 12 kV spark would definitely have been clearly visible as a weak coil.

Of course, had you mentioned the presence of a silver Bosch Brazilian coil and silver Permatune, that would have been recognized as potential problem area, instantly, too!

rebuild 6-pin Bosch CDI boxes was "Timing Chain Missing"

Early S Man - sorry to hear about your hospital stay (and without internet - WOAH!)...really hope all is well.

I knew all along I'd be better served to put a scope on the ignition, but I didn't have access to one. Additionally, while Lubbock has a PCA region, it has no Porsche mechanics OR anyone else I'd really trust.

I looked back at my earlier post and saw that I hadn't mentioned that my coil was the silver Bosch from Brazil. To me, it was just the Bosch replacement. I know now that many of you would have identified that most of these are bad or incompatible with anything but the original CDI.

BTW, my old CDI is the Bosch original rather than a PermaTune. Way back in the beginning, I wanted an original Bosch rebuild, but PP didn't have them available any longer. I ended up buying the PermaTune over the MSD or other brand. Naturally, I liked the ease of mounting that it offered. After what I have read, I wonder if I made the right choice. That's water under the bridge, I suppose we'll just wait and see now.

Does anyone know who will test and/or rebuild 6-pin Bosch CDI boxes?

Thanks to everyone again. I'll be fine tuning things now, if anyone has any wisdom to offer with regards to A/F ratio, timing and idle speed, etc.

Scott
