Wiring questions - 1980 3.0 into 1970 T

The 3.0 w/Webers/915 gearbox are bolted in and almost everything is connected except for......... the electrical. The 3.0 was most recently installed in a '74 chassis, so some of the hacking may have been for that application.

I've changed the CD on electrical console(EC) from the original 3 pin to the 6 pin from the SC. The EC and engine harness both have 14 pin connectors - pretty simple, but, there are several other wires coming out of the engine harness that don't have an obvious place to plug in. First question, is the 14 pin from the motor the same and a direct plug into the EC connector, or will some of the pins require relocating? Next, there are several loose wires from the engine harness. Can anyone help ID by the pics attached?

These are all pics from the harness off the engine-

The gr/wh is the oil temp on the motor. Is there a gr/wh on the EC?

There is some kind of device(capacitor maybe?) with tags labeled to CIS box on one side and GR on the other. It's coming out of the 6 pin CD plug.

More - my guess is these next ones may have been attached to the removed CIS components?

not that this is going to help all that much . .. but until Warren (or other electrical guru) chimes in...

Here's my SC. OE it had an external voltage regulator (now has an internal(alt). --so those wires (plug) hang'n out by the CD--I believe thats where they went.

just for more refnc...
circa right side cam cover

left side cam cover thermo-time switch --I don't think this applies to your webbers.

Glenn - thanks for the shots. That solves the question of the black t shaped 3 pin but raises the question whether my alternator has the internal regulator. How can I identify that?

I'm guessing that your 3.o has the external voltage regulator type Alternator. (that T-plug coming off) It also appears that you have the external reg sitting there from the 2.2.

Tho, Bentley sez, to be sure, look for:

FWIW Bentley also sez:

I don't know if those digrams reflect what you have or not.

there is a similar franken-swap thread here. . . . which Warren commented on.

But you have the additional problem of that 911SC engine being grafted into a 1974 . . . now going into a 1970.

Hmmmmm....

In the mean time, more pict's...

Here's the CIS plug, back by the firewall (don't know if you would even have that with carbs)

a bit closer on those wire colors;

Mark, that is quite a wiring collection...

Yfor the 14 pin harness you will have to switch a few wires. The only pins that will apply are the following.

1 - Yellow - starter 12V switched - should be the same on the SC harness
2 - green - Optional oil temp switch - should be the same on the SC harness
3 - Green/black - oil temp sender - might be black or green/black on SC
4 - Green/red - oil pressure - might be Gray/Red on SC
9 - black/purple - tach signal - will come from 6 pin CD harness
11 - blue - D+/61 to external VR and dash light - should be the same on the SC harness
12 - Brn - D-/gnd to external VR- should be the same on the SC harness
13 - Black - Df to external VR - should be the same on the SC harness
14 - red - 12V(hot) from Alt to rear panel - should be the same on the SC harness

I am not sure about the others but suspect they are not needed. Just make sure the "green" coax gets connected from the dist to the CD unit and that the starter has power and it should fire up.

btw, my targa is running again... after 19 months it fired on the second turn of the key. should be ready next week. Hope you can make it with the new car.

Jamie - thanks again. I see now that the harness on the engine is more hacked than I realized. Tonight I'm going to diagram the original wires to see how they compare to the wiring diagram.

Congrats on getting the targa back on line. Just in time for spring.

Why not pull the harness from the T engine and install it? you can separate off the 6 pin CD section from the SC and substitute it for the 3 pin CD from the T.

Take two and make one...
