Carrera Front end fire???

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1988-911-Blue-Diamond-Cabriolet-50-000-miles_W0QQitemZ150110393502QQihZ005QQcategoryZ1015 6QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Item number: 150110393502

Anyone know this car?? I've never seen a front fire like this. Was it gas? Battery? or both??

I have an '88 also so I'm wondering what started it.

Oh and If anyone owns this, I'd be interested in the seats, wheel, and deck lid!!

wow, that looks like the battery exploded based on where the most severe damage is.

A friend had a 1974 Carrera , and was driving on a highway when he had a dash fire. He crashed while taking a curving exit ramp and buckled the fuel filler neck. This really fed the fire, and the car was destroyed. The owner of the 88 must have been smarter and luckier.

I had a dash fire in my 1973 914, a wire for the high beam indicator. This was back in the late 1970's, so the car was not old at the time. Never did figure out why the short, but I was able repair it, and never had another problem with the wiring.

the condensor fan is not fused or switched, if the fan siezes up, then you get a dangerous short.

Is there a mod to the A/C condensor fan that can prevent this?

I asked my mechanic about it once, apparently you need a really large fuse, and in the end it probably wouldn't do anything anyway. I'm curious to know if there is something out there as well.

+1 on removing the A/C system. It never really worked well on older cars like my 81 and it was just extra dead weight I did not need, so out it went.

There is a Porsche fuse harness ("CHASSIS HARNESS") available. Part number: OEM-91161207700. It is listed here at Pelican as special-order, non-refundable for $23.70. I added one to my car -- it only takes a few seconds to plug in.
