Seam Welding an earlier chassis?

So early RSAs were seam welded left over cup shells...

Anyone ever seam weld an earlier (pre 964) shell? Seems like it would be a bit of work, but less intrusive if one wanted to maintain the totally stock look or add some rigidity...

Best regards,

michael

Seam welding is a worthwhile if your objective is to stiffen the tub. It is not a trivial undertaking unless you are already taking the car down to a bare tub. All undercoat and seam sealer needs to be removed before welding. If you are already going to do this project you may want to add some of the reinforcing that was added by the factory and race teams. Thus begins the slippery slope.

My 73RS replica (from 73T) was entirely seam-welded (I didn't do it) on a rotisserie and it is incredibly stiff. It does also have a bolt-in 3/4 cage, but I have to think the seam welding helped alot too. Handling is sublime (coilovers too)...
