What Parts To Have On Hand
Hello All,
I was wondering if someone could suggest a list of parts to always have on hand in your garage for a 1987 Targa. Thanks- Rob |

Oil Filter (Mahle) with 2 aluminum washers for the two drain plugs. Set of spark plugs. Spare DME relay (install the new one and keep the old one as a spare in the car). Some spare fuses and a round relay (also in the car). If your car has been maintained well you really don't need to keep many parts on hand.

Make sure you have the wrenches for changing the fan belt in the car.

Spare rotor and maybe even a spare distributor cap. I keep a spare rotor in the glove box along with a spare DME relay.

You might as well buy a full set of those plastic seat-back levers ($1.25 each, Pelican). You will probably end up replacing them all eventually.
An assortment of OEM fuses is handy to have as well.

yeah, I always carry a spare DME relay, fuses, air compressor (a nice one from Griots Garage), flares, fan belt, flashlight, and an allen key set in the toolkit. Also you should always have a few quarts of your chosen brand of oil in the front trunk at all times. Kragen sells some handy disposable paper funnels that work well.
In the garage, I also have many spares (+1 on the seat back release knobs, I have 3 spares at the moment as well as the little metal clip that retains the knob). As you work on the car, you'll find that you need to have many spare metric nuts and bolts, particularly the allen bolts that clamp the front wheel spindles, and the allen bolts that attach the cv joints to the wheel or tranny flange. You might want to buy a spare alternator nut and spacers, spare lug nuts, and bulbs for the instruments, turn signal/ brake and tail lights, headlights, etc. I forgot to mention that you might want to buy several of the little white plastic clip that holds the door latch acuation lever on to the inner door release lever. Those break eventually and then you have to open the door with a pair of pliers. If you really want to be complete, you will eventually need a turn signal switch/ lever, oil pressure warning light sender, thermostat o-ring, and crankcase breather gasket. I also keep spare CHT sensor, clutch cable (I think you have the G50 though), and heater actuation cables in the garage. For the 914-6 I keep the really rare parts on the shelf such as the Marelli distributor and rear brake calipers. Those are not spares so much, but I keep spare rotors and caps, points, etc for the daily use Bosch distributor. I have a long term view on Porsche ownership......
