915 2nd gear synchro?
Guys,
I have a 73T and the car drives great. However, when I first got it, the previous owner had bought and installed a new shifter coupler and did not do a very good job of adjusting it properly. He adjusted it so poorly, he thought that the gear box needed rebuilding.... So after spending 15 minutes on adjusting it the first day I had the car, the shifter shifts great and the tranny shifts very well - at least as far as 915 boxes go ![]() However, one thing which I have noticed on occassion is that the shifter sometimes does not not drop into 2nd gear as easily as the other gears. Specifically when I try shifting into 2nd gear at plus 5k rev's, the shifter doesn't want to drop in smoothly. It almost becomes stiff for a second and then will drop in almost with a click like feel at the end. If I don't pause an extra half second before dropping it in at +5k revs, it will make zing and not drop into to 2nd. On the other hand, when I downshift from 3rd gear to second at lower or higher rev levels, it drops in cleanly without any trouble or noise. I thought that it might be my shifter console. So I bought a nice one and installed it two days ago. I took it for a quick spin, and unfortunately, the issue is still there. So I can eliminate the shifter console as the problem. Also, asmentioned above, the shift coupler bushing is new. So is it a synchro issue, or something else that is fixable without pulling the tranny? I always assumed that if the synchro was bad, then it would crunch upshifting and downshifting? But there is no issue below 4500rev's speed shifting into 2nd, and no issue downshifting into 2nd from 3rd gear. It really doesn't bother me much since it isn't even an issue unless I wind up first and try to speed shift into second. But I would like to fix it if it's a matter of an adjustment or an easy fix which doesn't involve pulling the tranny. Any help/suggestions appreciated. Sounds like a common place worn 2nd synchro. To fix properly you need to remove and disassemble the transmission. The 2nd gear slider may also need to be replaced if it was damaged from shifting quickly w/ a worn 2nd syncho.
