Help needed with early car

Hi everyone,

Don't know if you saw my other post, but I picked up a really clean 72 Targa over the weekend and I need some help getting a few things back to original. The car is pretty much all original except for a 1978 3.0L and someone had the horrible idea of putting a Turbo tail on it as well as a Porsche reflector. See for yourself:

I have already removed those and it already looks better.
Now I do have the rear panel that holds the license plate as well as the original chrome bumpers that I would like to put on there. But I'm not too familiar with the pre-73s and I need some help figuring out what is needed to mount the rear panel and the two bumpers. I believe there should be a seal or some sort is that correct? If anyone could post some close up pics of how the rear panel and bumpers are mounted and what seals, bolts, etc etc I need I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

First, Congrats!

Second - it looks like somebody put the 1974-89 red backlight on your car too. If that's the red reflector and is removed, then yo should be close. IF not, that prob. needs to be changed before the rear bumper can go back to stock.

Third - the ass'y works by a sort of interlocking sheet metal system that uses the bumperettes. You'll want to look at the PET for your '72.

I don't think I have any pics but will look around.

From the looks of it I'd say this is the update kit. If so, you'll just remove the reflector and center bumper section. the original crossmember should still be there. Can you post a pic with the lid up?

What part of Phoenix are you in?

I just reread your post and see that you've removed the offending pieces.

Thanks for the congrats!
Yes they also put the red reflector on the car which has been removed with that bumper piece. Good idea about PET I will have to pull it up and take a look.

Not too sure what you mean the "original crossmember", can you give me more info? Here are a few pics I just took in the garage:

I'm in South Tempe by the way.

Thanks!

the 2nd pic shows that Xmember he mentioned - yours is all intact -- just needs new decals on it

the piece in the last pic is the license panel - it fits so the protrusion on the body goes all the way thru sq. holes in the lic. panel and they stick out. Then the bumperette thing goes on them and the bolts go down into that. Finally, ther ares ome plastic caps that cover the bolts.

Make any sense?

Crossmember is the part your rear deck lid latches to. On my '72 they cut it out and replaced it with the later version. Wish they'd just used the kit like you have instead.

I saw in your other thread that you need an upholstery shop. I just used: Interstate Custom Interiors 200 S Roosevelt Ave # 6, Chandler, AZ (480) 705-9038 for some work on a truck I'm selling. They did very nice work and they were reasonably priced.

I've got an entire 3.0 exhaust system with cat bypass that's been jet-hot coated, if you're interested. Sure would be easier to get too while your back end is apart.

It's pretty easy to reverse that particular "upgrade"...be glad the owner didn't decide to do the full miami vice turbo look wide body treatment. BTW, if that PORSCHE reflector is uncracked and in nice shape, it will fetch a hundred or two in the classifieds or on eBay. People like them to "backdate" their '87-89 Carreras which have an odd-looking reflector. I backdated mine with a reflector taken from one of these kits.

Look closely at that crossmember...looks like all five of the foil decals were simply painted over! Earl Scheib paint job is my guess. Anyway, mask around the decals and carefully apply some paint stripper and those hard-to-find foil decals will show their faces again!

Makes sense thanks for making that clear. Isn't there some sort of seal/rubber piece that goes between the license panel and the Xmember?

Thanks!

Yes I'm very lucky that they kept the car intact and didn't chop it up! Thanks for the lead on the upholstery shop, I will give them a call or stop by, they're pretty close to me. Do you know a body shop that does decent work in the area? I need to have them fix the decklid and respray it.
let me think about the exhaust piece, I haven't even started looking at the mechanical. By the way since I'm fairly new to AZ, isn't there like a "collector car law" which allows me to be smog exempt if I have Hagerty or similar insurance and drive less than a couple thousand miles per year?

Jay, yes I mentioned in my previous post, I'm very lucky that they didn't ruin the car and I should be able to restore it fairly easily
The paint job is actually not bad, but you're right about them painting over the decals. I will definitely try your paint stripping technique!

Thanks I see it! Now what is #10 (11,12,13,14)? I see one of the piece lists for $365, and another one for $100.

Great news, have you heard of anyone having gone through the process actually?

Those are the rare optional bumper ram bars and associated hardware. Don't worry about getting those...I think they are NLA anyway.
