Turn Signal Switch Repair or Replace
 

The turn signal switch in my 70 fails to return. Can it be repaired or must it be replaced?

Since you have to take apart the column shrouds and steering wheel to get to the switch, even to replace it...try to fix it first. I'm sure you will quickly see why it won't return and if it is repairable. Most are repairable (bending of tangs and reed contacts).

If you're the shade-tree mechanic that spoils everything he touches (me, for some bizarre reason!) or if you can stump up the cash, I suggest you just change it. I did mine sometime ago and it makes a world of difference. Much more accurate on the high-beam function as well.

I just replaced my turn signal switch, but not before taking it all apart and attempting a repair first. My high beam switch had become totally inoperative, but the turn signals were okay. Internally, some parts on mine had actually broken. Long story short.. on the back of the wheel there is a large plastic disk with a thick tab sticking out that handles the cancelation of the signal after turning. Your's may have just borken off. Pull the wheel and take a look. This may have nothing to do with your actual switch... just the surrounding hardware.

Troy is right. Check the back of your steering wheel and make sure the cancelling tab is still in place. Then look at your turn signal switch itself and simulate the cancelling process. First, engage the turn signal by moving it up or down until it clicks into place. Then push the white cancelling tab up or down. The lever should return to the middle position just as in normal operation.
