Temp sensor senders...are they that different?

I'm trying to track down why my (non-numbered) temp gauge doesn't register. The gauge is functioning, as I tested by shorting the sender wire...indicator needle jumps to full hot. When I connect the sender wire and turn on the ignition, the indicator needle jumps slightly and sits at the lowest line, regardless of how hot the engine gets.

Question is...if the temp sender installed in the car is for a "numbered gauge" and my gauge is "non-numbered", will the results be no/inaccurate reading? Are there more than two types of temp senders (beside numbered & non-numbered)?

there is a change sometime between the 2.7L and 3.2L motors.
- can't tell re your car as you didn't give the year

IIRC, it is about a 2x change.

I hate to tell you to search for it, but I think Warren posted the full details.

'79 w/3.0 ROW. I am unable to see the part number on the sender. Before I go through the hassle of removing it, I'm wondering if the wrong sender could be a problem. I noticed in the parts section here, there are two different senders/part #'s for numbered gauge senders vs. non-numbered gauge senders.

901-641-632-00-M100 Temperature Sending Unit, for numbered gauge 911 (1974-76) Brand: Genuine Porsche

911-606-112-00-M82 Temperature Sending Unit, for non-numbered gauge 911 (1977-89) Brand: VDO

So...question is: If the wrong sender is installed will it cause a misreading?
