73 911 parking light operation
I'm a newcomer to the Pelican Forums and thus far have found the answer to a number of questions in various threads, but not this one...
I'm rebuilding a customers '73 911 that has been converted for use as a Pro-Rally race car. I didn't have much contact with this car before it was brought to me for service, and the operation of the parking lamps has me a bit baffled. The parking lamps function normally when the light switch is turned on. The hazard flasher system works as it should, and as long as the ignition key is in the 'on' position, the turn signals work as they should. However, if I leave the turn signal lever in an 'on' position (either right or left) and turn the ignition switch to off, the parking lamps on the side of the car to which the lever is positioned come on. I have rebuilt all the park and taillight assy's on this car, and have tested each lamp independently to verify that all is correct. Each housing has been converted to use a separate ground wire attached directly to terminal strips which are in turn grounded directly to the battery. I see that '74 models came with a 'city' lamp in their headlight assy's. Is the phenomenon that I'm experiencing on the '73 some sort of a european 'city' parking mode? If this is not a normal situation, can somebody clue me in on what may be wrong? ![]() |

Normal. Designed to let you leave the light on the side of the car nearest the road when parked as a warning to others.

Thank you so much for your reply. I've rewired a lot of domestic and Japanese street and race cars in my day (and a few VW's), but have never seen this phenomenon before. Thanks again. Back to the rebuild.
