Disconnect smog pump - 78 SC?

Have to keep the pump for emissions in Denver. Is it ok to take off the belt between emissions tests?

Any advantage to doing so?

Any disadvantage to doing so. Will I screw anything up?

Thank you.

Don't think you will have any problem. The pump forces air into the exhaust ports and there is a check valve in the hard line to the ports that prevents exhaust gases from flowing backward into the pump. It's located just above the engine tin on the left side, and it's where the rubber hose from the pump connects. Removing the drive belt simply shuts down the system of air injection.

You can either just remove the belt, or remove the pump all together. Won't hurt.

I would remove the entire pump and store it safely. They have been known to sieze up while left in place without the belt. Takes about 5 mins. to remove.

So, install and remove once a year? I could do that.

That's what I do/did. Removed pump except for smogging. Too expensive to replace/repair old pump parts. When CA removed the 30 year rolling smog exemption, it forced many to have to cheat a little to survive the next 50+ years with old outdated, but mandatory, smog equipment.

You may run slightly rich without the pump working.
