My rollcage project...

I always want to see what everybody is up to on here, so here is my recent project....getting the rollcage in so my car is ready for NASA GTS Challenge.

First, stripped out everything I could from the car...pretty ugly underneath all that rear seat insulating material and ...hair, for lack of a better description.

Digging all that tar off the floor pans is lots of fun...and that stuff is surprisingly heavy - I bet there is 20 - 30 pounds of that stuff in there.

Then I delivered the car to Pipermotorsports in Sterling, VA and they put in the cage - very nice work. It's up to me to paint it, though.

Fortunately, I have lots of free labor around the house. Notice nascar style door bars - I had these put in both driver's and passenger's side.

No wonder the guys at Pipermotorsports said they'd prefer to leave the painting up to me....

Next: Couple of coats of primer, then paint!

Really nice job. Would of been easier to paint it outside of the car, but I guess it would of been hard to install that way

Paint ?

Why not spray outside the car and then brush the welded areas?

Try this stuff - no primer needed and tough as nails:

Tile Clad Epoxy Paint, Sherwin-Williams
(not water-based)

Too late now but a heatgun makes removing the tar from the floors a lot easier.

yes, a lot of effort could have been saved by painting at least the open stretches of pipe....oh well.

Got in and got the primer on (jaydubya, didn't see your post soon enough! thanks though) last night...

Notice the bar and plate going to the rear of the front wheel
wells - this was a nice touch to deal with a real weak point in these cars...

It'll be a few days before I can get back to the car for top coating...

Where's your rollbar padding. DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT. Looks nice, is it chromemoly?

Padding going in today...It's mild steel, but painted in a stainless steel paint color.

you're going to need a right side net or a halo seat if you run in NASA GTS

The net is a PITA. We had to fabricate and weld attachment points to the bar and to the firewall through the slot where the goes.
