Engine revs on it's own

This is my first post and need some help. I own an 85 Targa
with 55k miles, all original with no mods. I've owned it for
3 years and it's been trouble free until recently. On 2 separate occassions now, the engine would start over
reving on it's own when shifting into 3rd gear. Both times
I turned the ignition off immediately. When I restarted the
engine everything was fine. My mechanic had a quick look
and could not find the cause. Anyone have any thoughts.

Hi:

Sounds like the throttle linkage bushings are dry and causing a sticking throttle.

Your mechanic ought to be able to check the bushings at the front of the engine, at the bellcrank next to the left side of the transmission, and at the throttle pedal.

ya I would check the throttle linkage also. I had my lever get tucked up in the tunnel one time and it made the pedal stick to the floor.
