'73 T steering wheel

i've noticed older german cars prefer large, thin steering wheels.
i've noticed newer wheels chop off the bottom for leg clearance.
why did porsche offset the hub to the top third?
do smaller diameter "upgrade" wheels keep the offset?

I put a Prototipo in my 73.5 and never looked back. Big win over the stock wheel. Doesn't have any offset, but gives better leg clearance and a nicer feel.

Blocks the gauges some. Pics here:

If you search for "steering wheel", you'll find lots of threads with discussion and pictures.
