Winter project for RoxiE my '69

So the restoration project continues on the Tangerine 69 that ChuckW started a few years back. Original 2.0 was retrofitted with a 3.0 SC engine freshly rebuilt to stock. New set of PMO 40s and an Electromotive HPX Crankfire ignition were used as updates. Rebuild can be read here...Engine Rebuild

Car has SSIs and an M&K 2in1out. The valves and timing were adjusted in fall '06 and engine makes a healthy 165 ft/lbs at RW @ 2500 RPM and 170 at 5500. The Peak is 185 lbs at 4400. HP peak is 178 RWHP at 5800 and trails off slowly to redline.

August '06 underwent a complete update suspension at Musante Motorsport in Windsor, Ct. Very professional racing and repair outfit. Here's some replacement highlights.
New 21/27 Torsion Bars
Elephant Racing Polybronze front control arm bearing and mounts
Polybronze spring plate bearings
Adjustable spring plates
Front & rear Monoballs
Turbo Tie rods w/ rack spacer
Bilstein HD on all 4 corners
Lowered to Euro height and corner balanced.
Replaced the softwalled Khumos with 50 series Faulken Azenis.

Next up is the body work.

I traced the car back to Oregon and Washington DC so it is showing its age for a car thats been in northern weather most of its life. I bought the car knowing the passenger HL bucket was completely rusted and bubbles below the Targa bar. The PO had just replaced the front pan and gas tank. The car has been completely stripped. A total of 5 metal patches have been put in to cure rust through. One in each door sill, one in the passenger fender rear, under the right turnsignal and one in the rear window sill. The rest of the car is all solid and I'm actually quite pleased that only 5 patches were needed. Floors and wheel wells are clean.

Car is now in primer and ready to be jammed out after Christmas. I'm having all the interior body insulation removed and putting lightweight vibration strips and soundmat FV in the rear, doors and floors. I've planned a FG S spoiler and RS rear bumper. I hope to be able to knock off 100 lbs.

Merry Christmas, Joe!

I can't wait to see once it's all done. I have to send my '72 coupe to the paint shop, too. It's bahia red now, but I'd like to change it to tangerine orange or signal orange.

WOW! Thats a lot of work. I can't wait to see her done. I just got my first porsche about six months ago for 500.00. Sounds like your doing all the same things I have to do. Mine is a 1968 911L with complete orig running 2.0 with webers, a sportomatic, and factory fuchs. I plan to begin a complete restoration in 08. Is it worth it?

I figured going in I would spend 10k-15k making it better than new. With the body & paint, I'm at the high side now. Is it worth it? I think so. I'll be into the car for more than the current market prices but I don't plan on selling it for a long while. The car is too fun to drive and if you check Excellence for price history, early car values have doubled since '02. Will they continue to grow? who knows & who cares. You can't buy a new car and have this much fun

BTW, Roxie started life w/ a Sportomatic. Long gone though. I understand that rebuild would set you back quite a bit. Remember its a 40 year old car.

Thanks Joe, I have noticed the value trend going higher. I recently saw a mint 911L go for 39,000.00 on the internet at an auction. This boosted my investment moral. I cant wait to get started.

End result

Got to pickup Roxie from the shop today. I am in awe of the finished project, though I still have to sort out a few trim items , dash guages and wiring.

Early car values are strong, but that aside, I had way too much fun restoring my 70E myself. Taking these things apart and stripping 'em is easy, then let the body shop do the hard parts of painting (if you want) and then put it back together yourself

The car is 95% sorted and running well w/ just a few wiring gremlins left. I had the car weighed today and it comes in just a hair under 2300 lbs with a half tank of fuel. The stereo amp will bring it just over that mark once installed. The real weight saving was done with FG front and rear bumpers along with Cascade engineering sound deadener and insulation. Very noticeable sound impovement with the top on and windows shut.

I was amazed at the difference at what weight does to performance. On saturday I took the family out for a ride and I figure our total weight was just under 2800lbs. Car was pretty much a slug util it was higher up in the rev range. Sunday I went out with my 250 lb father in law and she huffed and puffed a bit. Brought it too work this AM and the pickup was quick and pulled well from 3000 on. Now I can see why newer cars need all that HP.

love your car Joe. What method did you use to strip it to metal?
