Newbie Question
Hey All,
I know that this may sound like a stupid question, but Im not as mechanically inclined/knowledgable as alot of the people on the boards... Im still getting used to the clutch in my 964....far different from my Honda! Im finding that I stall the car (or almost stall her (rpms drop real low for a split second)) every once in a while, mostly when reversing, or when getting in the car and taking off for the first time that day....The tranny/clutch in these cars are far more direct and stiff than the japanese cars...I LOVE IT. Can stalling a Porsche 964 periodically in either forward or reverse damage the motor in any way? Can it damage valves or any other internals? Thanks for any feedback! |
Won't hurt anything other than your pride.

remember Porsche's are high RPM engines. Dont be afraid to give it some gas.
|
No worries, you'll ham nothing with the occasional stall. yes, the forces are a bit higher than the jap in the boxes (I can say that, my race car is an RX-7, LOL)
You'll soon get the feel of the balance between the clutch engagement and the throttle pick up. And yes, feel free to run the engine up the rpm band,,,,,just not while slipping the clutch! |
The lighter flywheel just needs a bit more precision in your clutch work; practice will fix that, no problem.
Welcome to the board!! |
On my 89 3.2 I almost stall pulling out of the garage every morning in temps below 50 degrees. I just give it a little more gas. Once it sits for a minute and the idle calms down a bit its fine. I hear this is normal . . . at least for the 3.2s.

With a modern car you can start letting go of the clutch at the same time as you give it a bit of throttle. I have found that with my 3.2 it is most effective to first give it a quick dot on the throttle and THEN start to let go of the clutch as the revs still are above idle. Works every time. Used to be very embarrassing at the red lights before I figured it out.

BuellRunner,
Welcome to the Pelican Parts community. It is customary to post a picture of your new baby after you jump in. We all love pictures here! It took me a short time to learn the feel of my clutch... no harm done. |
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, and for the info!
Here are a couple pics of my first Porsche! I just got her last week! Cheers, Jackhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177440433.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177440451.jpg |
