Newbie needs targa seal assistance (with pics)

Hi Everyone,

My first time here so go easy on me. I'm having troubles getting my windows to line up with the roof on my '84 targa. See the pics below:

The 1st is with the roof seated in place and the 2nd is with the roof removed. As you can see the glass is being forced outwards at the top by the rollbar seal, is this normal?

I've pulled the rollbar seal out from its groove cleaned and re-seated it as deep as I possibly can but yet it still seems to push the glass out too far. If I remove the seal altogether and put the roof on, the glass sits parallel and perfectly mates up with the roof. Am I doing something wrong / do I have possibly an incorrect seal?

I'm not against replacing the seal with a new one, but I don't want to buy one just on the off-chance that it will sort the problem, because my current seal is in good shape (which makes me think its already been replaced, with and incorrect one?).

Thanks,

Jon

Thanks for the replies guy.

Syl - I've read through that post, they all seem to be talking about the front seal though not the rear, does anybody know if there are also issues with replacement rear seals / do they need trimming?

KC - Email Sent

I would be interested to hear from any targa owner who, if looks at their door glass from the angle of my 2nd pic, does the rollbar seal cause your glass to get pushed out as far as mine?

I've got a 1981 Targa and have had numerous issues with the window and rear seal/top seal gaps. As far as I've experienced the gaps are more related to the the positioning of the window than any problem with the rear seal. First make sure the door is correctly aligned (all gaps around the door equal and flush with the sheet metal). Adjust the door striker plate/hinges if needed. Then remove the interior panel and adjust the window. You'll need to set the height and angle of the window to meet the top seal properly, then adjust the plane of the window in/out to meet the rear seal. It will take several iterations to get it close to right. See thread: Advanced Targa window adjustment help needed. Please

for more info.

I have sent the info to all who have requested it. Good luck

One of the simple pleasures of life is to pass on to others what you have learned and hope those who recieve it will do the same.

How in the world do you think I have learned to work on my P-car????

Ah thanks sjepps just the info I've been looking for, I've gone through the adjustments in that thread and managed to get things 95% right. Couldn't quite get enough adjustment so I've also taken off my side seals and slightly enlarged the slots so I can bring them slightly further out to match the glass:

Can't try the seals again tonight as its raining and the car is hiding under its cover But hopefully that should give me the extra bit of adjustment I need.

Thanks for starting this thread, Javers! I just bought a targa myself and have exactly the same problem! My driver's side window doesn't quite come in enough to go under the targa seal. It's not as large a gap as yours, but it's enough to let some water in, and I suspect it's a source of wind noise as well.

Reading sjepps link to an earlier thread on this topic, I will check the rear seal alignment. Let us know how it comes out!
