Question '72 911 Oil Tank Removal

Anyone had any experience removing their '72 911 oil tank? I just can't figure out how this thing is removed and none of my manuals are any help. There seems to be more than just the strap that is holding it in. What else is there? All this just to get to the two speednuts that are under the decorative chrome strip next to the Targa bar so I can paint it! Please help!!!

When they built 72's, they sent the oil tank down the assembly line and built the car around it.

Just reverse the process.

It's just the strap. But it sets into 3 body shapings in the inner fender well, so it has to be pulled outboard about 1/2", while still keeping the filler neck clear of the opening in the body at the top.

Clean the area really well with degreaser, and some pressure first so if you have to remove the cap to get it out, nothing will fall in. You may want to remove the fill cap and tape the opening shut prior to removal.

there also a dimple in the tank that fits into a socket on the body. The biggest problem is freeing the tank from undercoating & gunk. I wound up using a flat bar & wood shims to pry it out. Be careful, that is a one year only tank & $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Actually there are 3, as I mentioned in my post.

I think it's 2 concave, and one convex, with little plastic protectors.

Save those plastic protectors, as they are NLA from Porsche!!!!!

Did you disconnect the oil lines to drop the tank, or can it be done with the lines connected? I'n facing the same task of getting at the targa trim fasteners.

I had to disconnect the hard line at the bottom after draining the oil, but left all 3 upper lines in place. I pulled the tank down but not out. I did have to make a tool to get the upper front Targa trim nut by welding an 8mm open end wrench (end only) to a 1/4 drive extension kind of like a crows foot and feeding the whole thing up from under the car. What a mess! Unbelievable amount of crud and dirt around the tank after 35 years.
