hassle when driving my 911

Hi.

On early sat am mornings I like to take my white 85 Carrera out for a drive down under here in Australia.

However there is an increasing trend for me to attract hassle whilst driving it.

I'm in my early 30s, past boy-racer phase, and drive a pure, clean 911 with no ostenatatious accesories. Apart for the menacing growl of my SSIs under load.

But what do I get; car fulls of rednecks driving past me sticking their fingers up; some idiot last weekend swerved in front of me and tried to cut me off, waving in front of me as though refusing to let me pass.

All this from just driving my pure 85 Carrera otherwise minding my own business.

Its not as though Ive paid mega bucks for the car and am some rich person, its 20 years old for crying out loud.

Maybe is something about the aura of Porsches that make people jealous. Maybe its just me.

Just wondering if others attract hassle too.

RG5 (still going for his early drives no matter what).

I noticed that when I drive my daily beater Toyota Corolla, I am ignored. I drive in areas that have a lot of high priced cars and they will not give me the time of day. When I am my p-car in the same areas, those high priced cars treat me as if I am one of them. Most people just stare at the p-car in awe.

I think it has to do with sheer ignorance, people do not know that you can buy an 85 for under 20K. I think they assume that the cars are in the high 80s even for a 20 year old car. I love my 85. I just wish it weren't sick ... I will have a new alternator soon though.

I get this all the time... I was out in my 993 today and some jackass in a riced out Dodge SVT little crap car thought he would try and show me up so he starts out next to me a the light...then swerves behind me real close for a second...then shoots out to the right lane, floors the little crap car and it buzzed off around me in the right hand lane with its little fart can muffler sounding off... I was tinking "whatever dude"...

Where are you RG?

Up here in Brisbane I generally get thumbs up or boy racers asking what size V8 is in the Porsche But I don't normally get any grief. My car is "vintage R looking", not 80's Gordon Gekko.

My wife won't drive it though as she seems to attract attention from sad gitts with porno moes...

I shaved off my moe....

Location Perth.

This usually happens enroute to Guildford, via Midland which is a bit rough.

That sounds pretty lame. I seem to get more attention from the cops than
A-holes giving me the finger. For the first time I got pulled over on the highway
driving my M5 and the car is completely stock exept for the 19'' rims.
His excuse " its just a random check, its not everyday you see a young kid in a expensive 5 series bmw" this was last year and I was 22. Since when is 22 a kid?

I told him how old the car was he just did not have a clue. Im pretty sure its the same with the p-car its just a timeless car that the majority of peple cant put a year on it.

Im not looking forward to the attention I will be getting with my 72 Black RSR.
Its pretty hard not too look so damn cool when youre driving a 911. Thats the price we pay. I think

Oh and for these reasons im getting tinted windows and a Radar.

I get nits in ricers cars who like to mess with me by cutting me off, thirty-something yuppies with new Lexus' who want to race, and young kids with 'stangs who want to race.

The finger thing, though, seems a little weird. It sounds like these guys are giving rednecks a bad name.

I guess it depends on where you are. In Southern California exotic and expensive cars and so common that my 911 doesn't attract attention unless I drive like an idiot and ask for it (which I don't).

I hate backwardass rednecks and don't think I could live in a place where they are plentiful.

The different reactions I get are interesting.

When driving the 1968, I've had 80-year-old women tell me how "cute" the car is (seriously...I pulled up to a cross walk as she was slowly crossing the street. She stopped, turned to me and I'm thinking "I'm in trouble now...she hates my loud, low sports car" and she said very loudly how much she liked my "cute" car, actually using the word "cute"). Everyone seems to think it's cool; no one particularly cares what it costs; everyone likes it.

On the other hand, I've seen the 1984 looked at as an expensive, "bad-ass" car and, yes, I've been "hassled" with it.

This, despite the fact that in a few years the 1968 may actually be worth more than the 1984.

I got more hassels with my e30 M3 then with any 911 I ever owned. The red RSA was somewhat close but not quite and the white speedtser was down right stealth. Sometimes I think people imagine a lot of the so called hassels of others.

I dont think the worlds been looking at 911's from the 80's and earlier like we here do in quite some time.

.....rednecks in Australia. Interesting. Here in bubba central I am mostly ignored in my SC on the few occasions when I put it on the street. I would have to raise the suspension, put big-ass mud tires with mud flaps on it to get any attention. Or maybe one of those huge boy-racer wings the guys put on those rice burners.

I do have a funny story to relate. I was in my SC stopped at a light last year. A truck load of bubbas pulled up to my left rear quarter. The driver gunned the motor to display his obnoxious dual exhaust system. I ignored him. He gunned it two or three other times. Again, I ignored. Then the guy just stands on the accelerator for what seemed liked 20 seconds. about this time, the engine makes an unfamiliar noise, sputters a bit then dies a slow death (I think it is called dieseling). In my rear view mirror, I watched the cars going around them as they raised up to hood. Perhaps you had to be there , but I laughed all of the way home.

Not much you can do about it, besides move I guess... the only similar story i have is being pulled over by cops in wellesley 2 weeks after getting my SC (also bone stock-no spoilers), apparently they ran my plate while driving behind me and determined that I had not had my emissions sticker re-newed when I bought the car! even though the sticker was still good, I'm sure they saw me (late 20's, and my wife (pretty blonde-If I say so my self!) and figured they'd find something wrong! I wanted to ask -but didn't, how they would feel if some poor guy was dying in a car crash across town but they wouldn't be able to get to them because they were to busy hassling me over an emissions sticker! what BS

In the end, if you love your car as I would bet you do, ya just got to ignore those fools as best you can.

Not sure what you mean about so cal - I have a brother-in- law there and I have seen more ricers there than anywhere (wasn't Fast and Furious filmed there?), and if I'm visiting driving his Audi S4 they all want to race - can't imagine it would be any better driving a 911. I love calif and sometimes wish I lived there, but another funny stereotype (my B-I-L is one of the "beautiful people" who lives in Laguna Beach and works out twice a day) was that the first time I visited about 20 yrs ago he had me convinced that everyone is fit, beautiful and rich in CA, but much to my surprise there were just as many fat/working class people as in ATL There also seems to be a different type of redneck in so cal, but redneck nonetheless. We were cut off on the PCH and yelling ensued between my B-I-L and a car full of what appeared to be hispanic gang members, though he said they were just hispanic school kids who don't like white people in expensive cars. Go figure.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks see us as snobbish rich guys who are flaunting our wealth. Few probably realize what our older pcars are really worth. or notice our dirty fingernails.
What's the old joke?" How do you tell a Porsche from a porcupine? The porcupine has the pricks on the outside."

That's how many see us.

My Gulf Blue '75 got mostly thumbs up from hwy workers, etc. and teen girls and little old ladies who asked what color it was - complimentary.

My silver Boxster got compliments from a wide range of people by both age & gender. I even got a flower placed on it one day. OTOH, some ass keyed once too.

I do think color and presence/absence of wild flares & wings affcts reactions.
