Another Thread On Replacing Targa Seals...
In anticipation of ordering one of Dan Petchel's (carsinc) new Targa-Windshield screen, when they become available, I've started replacing some of the other seals in an attempt to "waterproof" the cabin...as much as I can.
Here are some shots of the old Targa Bar Seal as it was coming off. From the condition of the seal and the adhesive, it's no wonder there was some searious leakage going on. These first couple of pics show the seal as it was coming off in my hand...no tools or acetone applied or anything...it just came right off in my fingers... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177809669.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177809700.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177809714.jpg These next pics show some of the "Jim-Rigging" the PO did...painting over the adhesive, and WTF is with these bolts? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810020.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810037.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810070.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810084.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177810101.jpg Randy |
Randy, those bolts should be plastic trim screws that act merely to cover the attachment points for the ski rack. They're not structural. Kind of a poor substitution on the part of the previous owner.

Here are a few shots from the other side of the car. What a mess!!!

Simply remove the screws holding it in place and voila! I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to photoshop a stainless steel Targa Bar onto this pic of my car, just to give me an idea... http://www.pelicanparts.com/pmpre/im...e/MVC-011S.JPG While I'm on the topic of the Targa Bar, I noticed there are several locations for screws to fasten the cover. On mine, I found a total of 6 screws holding mine on...three on each side, and none across the top. Also, the holes were no-where near being lined up for installing screws, I'll post pics tomorrow... I don't have a Targa, but I am curious for far you're gonna take the cleanup before installing new? 3M Trim Adhesive Remover? I have some crap like that on the edge of where my sunroof felt SHOULD be, but isn't. I have been putting off doing the cleanup as I am afraid I'll be peeling paint off. Then I think, "Well, if it comes off with trim adhesive remove then maybe it SHOULD come off, so I can mask, primer, paint and let it all cure before trying to adhere new good stuff to old crappy stuff". Post what you decide to do and what works.

What size are your wheels? They look small.
With all the mods to the car, I'm not sure an SS targa bar would look that good. |
Dan,
I actually used straight acetone to clean off the old ahesive. It was a little too dark outside when I finished to get any good pics, so I'll get some tomorrow. The acetone did a nice job on the adhesive without doing a thing to the paint. Tcar, The wheels are 7.5x17 in front and 8x17 in the rear. I agree the rears look a bit small, but if I went any larger, I'd have to raise the rear end. Randy |
Another question...
I've read a few different opinions regarding where to apply the adhesive. One said to only apply to the bottom (side B in this pic). A few others said to come up the sides a bit (A and C in the pic). Looking at the location of the adhesive on my car, it appears the PO applied it as far up as side D. What are your thoughts? Randy |
I suppose it would help if I posted the pic I referenced... :D

Randy,
I replaced my front targa bar seal a few weekends ago and I used adhesive on faces A, B, and C (and probably some D -- I don't recall for sure, but I used glue in the entire channel). Heaviest on B, and lighter on A and C so it wouldn't seep up and make a mess. |
Thanks, Scott! That's how I was thinking, but since I also saw it posted here to only apply the adhesive to B, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
A, B and C it shall be. :D Randy |
Will all the plastic nipples now be avaliable too?
