M&K Muffler for 993 - Sound Clip

I finally had a chance to have the dual-in / single-out M&K Muffler installed on my 3.6 engined 1975 911S. Let me start with a simple statement...I love the sound!

The fit had to be adjusted since this is one of the test designs.
The Major adjustment was to add 2" of pipe to the drivers side flange, this pushes the muffler to the rear and straight with the rear bumper.

The second adjustment was a cosmetic change, the exhaust tip was rotated up to point out the rear of the car instead of down toward the ground.

Here are a few images of the muffler installed.

To compare the sound I have compiled a small video clip.

M&K993

Thank you Ben for the great muffler!

you think? I thought the old setup of just cats and tips sounded very V-8'ish but the M&K has brought back a true Porsche sound. =o)

the sound is great and a drive at 3k to 4k rpm was very nice with very little resonance. This is a sport design muffler so it's not super quiet, my guess is well under 100 db at 3500 rpm and not much louder at 6k rpm. =o)

It would be nice to compare with the original equipment muffler...it does sound quieter. The first muffler was too boomy and would be to resonate driving without ear plugs. How about the differencce in power or weight, how does the twin outlet compare?

herman and rs6er-

Download the free Flip4Mac plugin and view WMV files inside of QuickTime--a much more pleasant experience than that crappy Microsoft player.

also the M&K is soooo much lighter than the stock system. The butt dyno tells me that there is more back pressure and possibly expanded the power band slightly, it feels like it kicks in at 2k rpm instead of 3k.

here are the numbers:

idle - 800 rpm - 88 db
mid - 3500 rpm - 99 db
high - 5000 rpm - 107 db

this is a good thing as under 100 db at the mid range will get me back on the Nurburgring.

I've got the same muffler on my 3.5 that has 993 heat exchangers and I love the sound. It really does have a V8 rumble at idle. I can't wait to hear it when I toss the CIS and install the 46mm PMOs this weekend!

the best I can describe the sound is much like the Yellowbird, just a bit more rumble though. Although I think the Yellowbird is 110 db at WOT.

Ben,
If you look at the second picture you can see that the muffler would not be in line with the rear of the vehicle and also would hit the aluminum heat tube that runs above it. The shop added the 2" to that side and that places it where it should be. Also the tip was pointed toward the ground so they re-positioned it to point straight back. When I get home I will post a picture of the parts pulled off the car that show the mounting flanges are not in line. They did a great job and I am happy with the performance. =o) Thank you for the muffler, I highly reccomend your products.

Thanks for the feedback and the pictures.
Can you provide any more details/ measurements / pictures on the installation as well as clearance to the rear valance?

I'm really enthusiastic about this now, especially since you mentioned something about the aluminum heat tube. (Are you referring to the stock aluminum tube for the 993?) Where did you put the O2 sensor(s)?

I'm planning a 3.6 installation into my 81 SC and these are some of the last details.
I'd surely appreciate any help you can give to me and Ben!

BTW it looks great and yes Ben's mufflers are very high quality stuff!

Thanks again!
