wiring smoking on 71 911T
I decided to get my 1971 911T out of storage (since 02) and get it running again. I took it to a local shop to have the oil & gas drained and refilled. They got it started & running. When I went to pick it up, they had 1 battery hooked up and the key turned to the accessory position. No big deal. I had them take their battery out and put mine in. i didn't have a battery in it while in storage and the old ones were toast. Almost immediaty the wiring(?) started to smoke on the upper left side. Could the newer battery have made that much difference? I have not ever had any issues with the wiring before. Was the car pulling a small charge that I compounded with a brand new battery? What now? Car is 123K stock with upgraded tensioners and webers.

What wires, exactly? You should disconnect the battery before any more damage results, could be catastrophic.
What often happens is that the wires chafe against one another and eventually the insulation wears through and you get shorts, which result in insulation burning. See here for links to replacement wire. It is critical to use the exact size, color and tracer stripe as the original to make future diagnosis possible. where to buy wire?

In my experience, once you let the smoke out of the wires the thingie its attached to doesn't work any more. Did they hook the batteries up correctly?
