74 915 4 speed, can I add a 5th Gear
Howdy,
Can someone help me I have a 1974 911 with a 915 4 speed box. I am getting the box rebuild from gears from another 915 box 5 speed 76 carrera. I need to find out if my existing 4 speed will accomidate a 5th Gear? I'm using the gear sets from the other box. If not what do I need to accomidate the 5th Gear? Matt |
'76 C3 came w/ a 915/44 5spd, as long as you have all the internals they will transfer over to the '74 915/16 4spd.

g'day matt,
carlos in glebe rebuilt my box (for the previous owner) was a 4 speed, now a 5 speed with lsd :) not sure whats involved though |
Carlos is doing mine, but I was just checking if the stock 4 speed would accomidate the 5th Gear, Carlos is not sure until he looks at the box which he will not have until tomorrow.

ah i see. let us know how you go

Matt,
Is the ’76 5-speed Carrera with the oil pump? Regardless, why not use the 5-speed as is? Even if it needs servicing, there is less set-up compared to transferring the internals to your original 4-speed. I recommend you preserve your 4-speed unmolested and freshen the 5-speed. Best, Grady |
the carrera diff case housing is cracked, the dif is shot so I want to used the parts to re-build my 4 speed as a 5 speed

Bill you answered one of my questions yet again thanks.
JV911SYDNEY I'll let you know once it's done. Matt |
