1st gear synchro condition on 901 tranny

Greetings.
I'm currently sorting out a newly purchased '69 911T with a 5-speed 901 tranny. Of course, the initial "sorting out" turned into rebuild the suspension, brakes, steering... which turned into underside rust cleanup (thankfully no holes)... which turned into engine compartment, fender wells, floor pan, trunk painting...

Given the engine & tranny are out of the car, decided to fix a few leaks and perform a more detailed inspection of things. Pulled the rear tranny cover to install a new gasket and had a look at 1st gear synchros. Am hoping others can take a look at the pictures and give their opinion on condition of things... As background, when driving do not have any grinding of gears, only on a rare occasion will it pop out of 1st gear, but sometimes (perhaps 50% of the time) it's very difficult to put the car into 1st gear. As well, have a lot (perhaps 1") of side-to-side slop when it is in any gear (although from reading other posts on this forum, seems common).

The synchro hub looked fairly new and in good condition; as well think the slider is still doing okay, but would appreciate second opinions. The thing that was troubling me was the synchro ring - the normal wear is easy to spot, but the areas circled in the pics are where the surface metal has actually chipped away. It's only in the two spots circled, the rest of the ring has minimal wear. I'm inclined to replace, but appreciate other opinions. As well, what would cause something like this?

Greatly appreciate any and all comments.
Patrick

the teeth are hooked, syncro is polished/pitted and the slider is borderline, but probably useable. better looking than most of them, as it still has pointed teeth. probably still shifted ok, but for how long? teeth and syncro should be replaced at least.
