AC- if you could design what would you do?
 

I have pretty good AC in my 83SC after adding a underbelly condensor,fan assisted condensor in the rear quarter panel,barrier hoses etc. etc.:) But if you were working on a Porsche ( 70-80's vintage ) that didn't have AC what would you add/change to make a good working system? I'm trying to design a AC setup for my project 914 but the problems to overcome I believe are the same for a 911. Has anyone used a underdash system like the hot rod guys use? What condensor/condensors would you use? Trying to think outside the box but still keep cost reasonable. I have the ability to do all the work myself as I have redone my 911. So what do you guys suggest?SmileWavy

I installed an aftermnarket unit from Hot Rod Air in my 70' El Camino. With one condensor smaller than the one in the back of our 911's, it works extreamly well. The evap core box, which is a combination core, blower, and manifold is a bit large to deal with in a 911. They do make smaller evap core boxes with fewer air outlets, but even their size seems too large. What condensor did you put in the rear quarter?

With only an air cooled 6 cylinder producing upwards 0f 180 HP in the older 911's and much less in the 914, and A/C system seems the ultimate losing compromise, loss of valuable power and weak cooling as the condenser location is the hottest point of the car, the engine lid. I'm leaning towards buying one for my 1968 Jaguar E-Type, but with a 4.2 liter motor and loads of low end torque, it shouldn't have much trouble. But my 71 911S and 74 914 will remain al fresco cars, roll the windows down, and the faster you go, the more air conditioning you get. Good luck, Allan

The condensor I put in the quarter panel is a unit I purchased from MTG which is a provider of parts for limos. I won't be putting a condensor over the engine bay in the 914 and I forgot to mention I'm putting in a 911 engine so power won't be a issue, plus I'll use a Sanden compressor which uses very little power.
