Cab headliner question

My headliner is torn in a few spots and I've toyed with the idea of replacing it. When looking carefully at one of the torn areas I noticed that the material beneath it has the same exact cross hatch pattern. Since I always use the tonneau cover when the top is down, am I safe taking out the ripped headliner, leaving whatever is beneath it - which I assume is just the underside of the canvas top? Has anyone done this? How does it look? I think my top has a few years left in it and I don't want to spend money on it right now.

I am considering the same thing - the trouble is just getting it out cleanly
