More small stuff

As I don't sit in the rear seats, and will not open the early chrome windows, I deleted them to replace with fixed frames. I did not want the vents (make noise) so I decided to use the SC fixed frames and delete the glass and replace with 3/16 lexan. I also will replace the rear glass with lexan, but it will need to be cut first and then heat molded to the correct shape...the rear glass
The 4x4 ft lexan sheet
I will use a fiends commercial oven to shape the lexan over the OEM glass...275 F for 20 minutes to dry the plastic, and the 350F till it takes the shape. I cut the lexan wide to provide for shrinkage
The uarter windows were easier
I outlined the glass
cut trimmed and fit
Rough melted edges from the dremel blade
Perfect fit

There was a guy making those fender tubes in Canada out of SS, he was selling them on E-Bay, haven't seen them for a while, but I haven't looked either.

+1. I think unless it's silver, it shouldn't be metallic. It goes against the whole period, IMHO. I liked the original non-metallic blue/grey idea personally. Or the slate grey.

I am liking the Gemini blue, idea; although a later color, still close and a damned sharp color.

+2 on the metallic. It's too rock star. Lars is definitely a rock star, but with a car like this, there's not need to advertise.

BTW - the old J tube looks pretty decent - couldn't clean and use it?

More bright stuff

There is a reason the shops that polish our parts...wheels, trim bumpers etc get the big bucks. I needed to take black annodized 1/4 window trim back to "polished" to match the trim on th rest of the car. A friend had suggested the oven cleaner and scotchbrite method. I dont know how many coats of paint were on top of the black annodization
Even tough the parts almost look shiny, what you see is several dried coats of Easy Off...which for me was anything but...
I got frustrated with the results and decided to used mechanical energy to sand them down to the aluminum vs chemical energy to remove the material
this was a lot quicker and I just need to be able to polish the "swirl" marks
After an hour of amateurish polishing with my homeade polishing wheel...they look great

I decided to try my hand at rejuvenating the 42 year old rear view mirror
and voila...trick is not to cook the polishing compound onto the surface you are trying to polish...I'm liking this

I also took the opportunity to clean up the heater valve assemblies that sit atop the heat exchangers
nasty...and now nice ready to paint...I have the nicest underside of a car I know.

Lars nice work as usual and thanks for the daily motivation...however the nicest underside of a car I know was my Mach 1 (and yes I did it myself)...and I apologize that it is not a Porsche - but it was a Grand National champion magazine car...

Lars,
That wasn't "from the factory" black on that was it? Amazing results. Do you offer courses on this?

Out of cursitity. When did they switch to a rear view mirrior that was attached to the windshield? Mine is incorrect and generic and wont let my sunvisors flip down......too long.

Your '73 was originally mounted to the windshield, but different from the pucks that are mounted on later 911 glass. It should use a trapezoidal shaped adhesive pad to attach.

Josh is the resident expert...

On muffler deflectors and rear view mirrors...as when he is on the track, he never uses the later when blocking

I don't know when Porsche went from the long "dangle" mirror to the windshield glued mirror.

Luke...you are correct. This is what I started with
and this is what I ended up with
to prove it...here is the backside
Next up...reproduce or improve on this
and clean these up
And "fur" these out with some 1/2 inch alum diamond plate...easier heal-toe

Wheels came back from the refinisher

Nice job
The centers are a dark grey powdercoat and the aluminum edges are machined and polished
Lets now hope they fit under the rear fenders
The good news...color will be Cobalt Blue....couldn't find any way to get the waterbased Azurro Ca converted to oil based paint...pondered Gemini Blue, and flipped a coin...heads means Cobalt. Only democratic way to do it.
Other good news...with a little luck the trannie gets rebuilt in the next couple of days as I now have the gasket/seal kits.
Bad news...I was going to use a restaurant friend's commercial oven to shape my lexan for the rear window. A commercial oven just means that it is built like a sherman tank...not that it is big. I asked if it was BIG and he assured me it was. Nope, not much larger than the one in my kitchen, and about eight times as heavy.I need to befriend someone who manages a pizza shop...those ovens are wide...right? Not very tall, but reasonably wide I think.
Other bad news...I don't have a key for the ignition and local Porsche dealer doesn't either. I need a key for a late 356 or early 64-68? ignition. If I get a "cut" key from some other early car, I can rekey the ignition and doors....oh yeah, that would mean that potentially someone else would have a key to the car...hmm, not so good an idea. Or, if I can get PNA to order a blank, maybe they can cut the correct key from my vin? Anybody know?

Happy 4th everyone.

Big change from the 'before' pic on those wheels. The machined and polished edges are the look that I'll want with my fuchs. I wonder if they can do the same with the fuchs petals...hmm.

SWB 911R...the beginning

I'm a huge lover of Fuchs Lars but these are mighty pretty and assuming they fit, I think they will look great with the blue paint.

A couple more wheel pics

The incumbent deep sixes with hearts...
and the competition...

All the wheels look perfect, so I only unwrapped one.
I inventoried the fuchs today and realized that there are a set of black centered 15x7s that could be the second runner up...if they got polished.
I'll wait till the car comes back from the painter. Maybe I can mount the various wheels and do a semblance of a poll.
