YOKO's or Kumho's opinion's please

I've never used either of these brands, of tires but will soon be purchasing a set for my 88 Carrera. I bought a set of the new 17" Fuchs replicas and will need new rubber also. I currently have Pirelli p6000's on 15" Fuchs

The car is used for street only, no track use (cant afford to abuse it). So wet traction is a must and I also drive it all year round ,so summer tires are out of the picture.

Another thing is......I'm an old dude , and don't have the same need for speed as I did when I had my first Porsche......way back in the late Y's. I do however like to let it rip from time to time and enjoy a spirited run through the mountains.

the things I'm wondering about are, rough ride, corner grip, mileage......

I'm looking at the Yokohama avs es100 and Kumho ecsta mx.
These tires seem reasonably priced, which is a big factor.

I'm seeking your experience and opinion on these two brands, or advice on other brands which may suit my needs.

Big southern redneck thanks to all yall

Don't run the ES100's. I ran them on my BMW and I didn't like the way the tires deal with unever road conditions. Well I screwed up an put them on the 911..................big frigging mistake. The only saving grace I burned them out fast.
I went with the Yoko AvidVS4 on the 911 and I like them very much. They handled the dragon well last november, they are quiet, and have a good tread life.
I have Kumho something or others on the BMW now and they are ok (for the street) just nothing to write home about.
Since you don't have a need for R-compound tires, you should look at Mischelin, they have some nice allseasons that are priced well. Just stay away from the hydro-edge tires, they are a tad noisy. I have them on the MB, and the wife likes them, they are great in the rain. I just hate the noise.

I would do a search. There's a ton of info out there. Some tires to consider are not necessarily comparable....and yet compared, so use discretion when searching the forum archives. Avons have been discussed, as well as Bridgestone, certainly Michelin, and Yokohama ES 100s ad nauseum. You will see polar opposite reviews (compare mine with Rick's) on the same tire, so as they say "ymmv" and everything is relative.

That said, I have the ES 100s on my 92 and had them on my 77. I have had pretty good luck with them and would recommend them for your described use and I will buy again. They are quiet, have very good wet and dry adhesion and don't wear too fast. I have used them on the track and they are too soft in the sidewall for serious track days.

The kumho MX is what I am running and found out that they are very
good in the rain. Braking was great. 225 rear and 205 front on 16's

I have the Kumho MX's on my SC. They are the best bang for the buck.
Very sticky when warm and they warn you before they go away.

I run the ES100's on my SC. I've had a couple of sets of them now and have never had a problem with them. I run stock 225R and 205F x 16"

I moved into these from the previous generation of AVS Intermediates.

The car is a daily driver and usually sees 2 drivers ed/autocross events every year.

I drive between 10,000 and 12,000 miles a year.

What I have found is that I need rear tires once a year (every August) and fronts every two years.

The tires do roll over pretty good at the track and tend to howl some in understeer.

Like other's have said read the reviews and you will see lots of different opinions!

I've never heard really bad things about the Kumhos...and they are about the same price point. Were running Michelins on the 993...talk about spendy!

Good luck.

Cheers, Cooper

I'm in the same exact situation as you, KC. I currently have the Yoko ES100s on my car, and had them on my previous Audi. I think they're a pretty good tire. They're MUCH better that the entry level Kumhos (712s) but figure the MXs will be a better tire than the ES100s. That's where my question begins - is the added adhesion and decreased mileage worth the added cost with the MXs over the ES100s? What kind of mileage are you guys averaging with either of these tires?

Thanks,

I ran the ES 100's. They are fine for casual Sunday driving but are terrible when pushed (in my opinion). Try a set of Hankook RS2. I don't have a lot of miles on mine but first 100 miles they are WAY stickier than the ES 100's and cost about the same.

In addition, when mounted, they took almost no weight to balance them. I like em....

How about a set of Toyo Proxes 4's?

I've had these tires on my car for a while and really love them. They grip the road, rain or shine, and make my car feel like it's riding on a rail.

Just my own $.02.

I bought a set of ES100's for the 911, and after a couple hundred miles, took them off and got rid of them. All they were good for was keeping the Fikse wheels off the pavement.

I've got 17" ES100's on my Talon and they're the cat's meow... excellent grip, good turn in, good value for the $$. So when it was time I put a set on my 911 (16"). Not the same at all. Way too much sidewall flex. The day I drove home with them it felt like all my bushings had failed!! The rear waggled awfully. I've found out that some sizes have reinforced sidewalls. Obviously mine don't. That's my biggest gripe with them... squishy sidewalls.

I've run the ES100's for three years now and haven't had any regrets. I run them in Arkansas and our roads are pretty good and they do well in wet weather. I liked the cost for the wide rang of utility I get from them. Can't speak for the other tires mentioned though.

Ditto that. Had the all-seasons on for a year. paid about the same in my local garage. why pay more for street driving.

Dentist90 hit an import point right on the head. Rear tires on a 911 need to be stiff! Love my AVS sports! Hated some Falken tires that were bought in an emergency situation (sidewall flex made for squirally handling.) Korea's Nexen or Roadstone with similar tread to the AVS Sports seem to have the stiffer sidewell and do very well on my 951, but I haven't tried them on the 911.
