Attn: NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, and LA Pelicans

Will be picking up a car in Durham, NC on May 7th and driving it back to Texas the next day. Looking for anyone along this route who might be willing to give assistance should I have trouble along the way.

The car is a 78SC with around 170k miles on what I think is the original, unrebuilt motor. So, you can see where I might be just a bit apprehensive about driving it 1300 miles by myself. I am a mechanic and will have tools with me but it would be nice to have a couple of phone numbers of some Pelican brothers I could call on if something catastrophic were to happen.

Please PM me with your info if you are willing to be on stand by for me.

thanks in advance,
Jeff Frazier

I continue to be impressed with the Porsche community. Especially Pelican and PCA. This post netted me at least 6 phone numbers in less than 3 hours.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Keep em coming. I got GA and SC covered so far I think.

I used to live in HEB and now Charlotte. I made the drive you are taking many times. I'll PM you with my cell phone in case your initial leg is a bit short.

I am hearing that Atlanta should be avoided esp. at rush hour.

Any of you folks out that way have any suggestions on an easy way to avoid it.

I thought about going from Durham to Knoxville then down to Birmingham to pick up I20.

I've never been to this part of the country so I have no idea.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Atlanta is busy mornings and evenings. Weekends, middle of day and night isn't terrible!

From 1980 - 1991, I bet I drove D/FW to CLT 50+ times. Time and distance is about the same for I-40 to I-30 versus I-85 to I-20. That said, if you can miss Atlanta at rush hour, I remember the condition of the roads better on the I-20 route. Coming home from LA last year in my SC across I-40 did nothing to change my mind.

I don't think it would be worth driving out of your way just to avoid
Atlanta. Just try to make it through here between 10 and 3 during the day or between 8 pm and 6 am at night.

I got a PM from chrisf who suggests going East to Asheville the taking the Blue Ridge Pkwy to Chattanooga. I think that would make a great first leg. I don't want to spend all my time on scenic drives but one day of it wouldn't be so bad. Plus Chattanoga sounds like a better place to spend the night than Atlanta or Birmingham.

What do you guys think?

If you went the Cahttanooga route, then you could hit I-65 in BNA, then south through HSV then hit 59 @ BHM to I-20 at Tuscaloosa.

Yeah, I'm with Rob. After 3 trips x-country in a 911, I always stick to the well traveled routes where I have my best chance for help.

Well, if I decide to go the scenic route from Ashville to Chattanooga that will be my only venture off the interstate for the whole trip. I will have a couple of hours between Durham and Asheville to decide if the car is sound enough to venture off the more traveled Interstate. If it's not I can stay on the interstate.

I've just always wanted to see some of that part of the country.......plus it adds to the excitement.

If the car you are buying has a working radio, may I suggest you buy a Sirius radio. You have a couple of days of really boring roads ahead. On my last trip for west to east, I stopped in Albuquerque and bought a Sportster. Best money I spent on that trip.

I have been a Sirius subscriber for 2 years. Love it!

Already in the works to get a sportster to take with me. Need to hear back from the current owner of the car as to the health of the radio.
