Doing Mig in welding class this week....the fear of working on my car is dissipating!
Almost done with stick welding in class and ready to start Mig either Thursday or next Tuesday. I gotta say the more practice i get with a welder, grinder, etc. the less fear i have of attacking metal issues on my car (or any car for that matter). I'm not saying i'd try to butt weld a set of RS flares on my car just yet but i sure have no more fear about patching small holes, fabbing up a low seat mount for my GTS seats, etc. And i have very little remaining fear about replacing my pan.
I don't know if 'liberating' is the right word but a whole new aspect to old car ownership and restoration has been opened up to me and i love it! |
Welding is a ton of fun! I just bought a small used Hobart mig a few months ago. So far I have not done much, but make a few fire extinguisher mounts for the VW, but its a blast :)
When you make your seat mounts post them up as I kinda need to do that as well... if I don't want to remove the padding that is... Best regards, Michael |
You only have to watch the dopes on Discovery channel to realize that it can't be too difficult. the main thing is practice, (and knowing your limits).

berettafan...
What part of MD are you and who/where is the welding class? P- |
eastern shore and the class is at a high school in salisbury.

Oh well.. guess I'll have to look closer in. I've got quite a bit of expierence but would like to hone the skills... I'm rusty. sold my equipment etc.. and haven't really had the need to do any. I get to play around with my torches every now & then however!
Weather on the Eastern Shore should be just gett'n nice this time of year.. used to date a little cutie from Easton. ;-) See ya.. P- |
Aside from forcing you to practice I never found a course terribly useful. If you have a bit of experience you just need to practice.

if the damn trees would quit having sex i'd be enjoying the weather quite a bit more!
i should mention i have never even seen a welder in person before i started the class. it is really just amounting to a lot of practice with various machines but with a major difference being i have a very experienced instructor right there if i have any questions. |
And, you get some knowledge of metalurgy. Some, but enough to make you realize that all welds are not necessarily good even if they look good. The thing about welding class with MIG is that they usually teach pretty much an industrial application. If you can get your instructor to show you thin sheet metal techniques, that will be very useful for your 911 project. You need smaller wire; lower heat. Try to maintain something like 1/4" stickout consistently and you'll have a nice beginning to sheet metal work. That's about where I'm at now, but I took a tangent and started TIG. I don't even have a TIG, but it's good to know, IMO
