What would you do if this was your airbox?
 

Not sure why a PO would do this. Any ideas why? What would you do with it? I can't imagine it is good to have unfiltered air coming in.

Basically, it is a hole with a half-a$$ed atempt to cover it with some sheet metal.

Poor mans Pop Off valve - or at least an attempt to cover up what looks like incorrect placement. A hole saw wasn't used etc.

A pop off is recommended - perhaps one could be used to replace the sheetmetal "one way" flapper valve.

I agree it is an attempt at a pop off valve. I would seal that after placing a proper pop off valve in place.

Doesn't look like the hole is over the manifold at all. I would just epoxy a flat piece of plastic over the hole. Or maybe you can plug it from the bottom when you take it out the air box to install the pop off valve. You really should get one.

I have a pop-off valve to install. Do I take the box apart before using the hole saw? Is there anything underneath?

Thanks for the input. I will figure out a clean way to seal off the hole.

My car had a pop off valve installed when I bought it, so I've never installed one. I would think you'd have to take the air box out so you didn't get any plasic particles in the intake when you cut the hole.

Hopefully, the part you have has instuctions for the proper location and orientation of the valve. I've only had one backfire (that I know of) and it blew the valve completely out of the airbox and dented the air filter. I think the valve was installed backwards which prevented the valve from opening completely. I cleaned it up and glued it back in the right way and haven't had any problems.

Yea, you definitely don't want to use the hole saw while the box is still on the motor. Bad times for sure. :-)

Believe it or not, that's nothing. My airbox had a TOILET FLAPPER WATER VALVE in it!!!!!!!! No *****. My mechanic and I laughed like hell because someone had actually installed it thinking (I guess) it would work as a pop off valve and then when it didn't, they epoxied the poop out of it to seal it. I only found it because my car backfired and blew the airbox so I changed out the box for a clean used one. Yes, I DID install a regulation pop off valve this time. If I find the pictures, I'll post them here.

To install your new pop off, you should follow the instructions that came with it. Believe it or not, you hole saw the air box IN the car. A right angle drill might be helpful. The hinge should be oriented toward the BACK of the car so that if there is a back fire the valve can flap open. If it is oriented the other way, the flapper hits the air filter and can't open. After you drill take a shop vac and suck up as many of the chips as possible. The motor will ingest the other few that you cant get.

I would epoxy over the square hole as others have said.

I used JB Weld to epoxy mine.

Priceless.....waiting for pics........ I wonder if a pop up valve could be made out of a womans shoe?:D

I intalled mine with the box in the car. I just used my 18+ year old shop vac to suck out the plastic.

BTW, my first one lasted 6 months. I think it did its job and disintegrated; luckily it was replaced 'under warranty'.

Ahhh guys, the hole is in the wrong place by a mile for a pop-off valve! A pop-off valve needs to be over the corrugated or ribbed section of the air box floor where it actually relieves the vacuum chamber part of the air box (if that's the right term). All that hole is going to do is let dirt and debris into the air box.

As Cooper911SC said and install a new pop off and follow the instructions that come with it!
