I'm back after an almost 5 year haitus!

First off, lemme say, I have sorely missed this BBS. It was invaluable to me when I had my dearly departed 84 Carrera.

So, I am looking at an 85 911 Turbo, 70k miles and am not really serious about the purchase yet, but I commute into work with the guy and he and I have made a deal. I do minor work for him, and I get to drive it. He rarely drives it anymore so I am fairly sure I will get some major drive time to decide if I will buy it.

So, the first notable problem is: Throttle seems fine, but when slowing down and pulling out of gear to neutral, foot off the gas, the tach drops to 0, then bounces back up, the car feels like it'll stall, then doesn't. Idle sensor? Mass Air Flow issue? Anyone? I think I had this problem on my 84, and don't remember how I solved it.

Second item of note, since the car has been sitting for a while, there is a noticable lean no the right rear of about 3 inches. Now, I have not seen it yet, but I assume the strut is shot, has leaked and needs to be replaced. Is there anything else it could be? Could it be from simply sitting for a while without use?

I'll get a pics of it when I get a chance and will update once this "deal" gets moving. I am just so jazzed about getting back behind the wheel!!!!

Josh

I would say that someone removed the decel valve.

That is a lot of lean. Maybe a broken torsion bar.

Kinda hard to tell from here though

Turbos had CIS so no Mass Air Flow sensor or the rest of the electronic stuff like your '84.

+1 on the decel failure or you may have a vacuum hose loose some where. Might be good to go get some yards of vacuum hose and replace it all and call it basic maint. I just did that on my '00 Bug because some of the hosing had holes in it and its got less than 70k miles and a good 15 years younger too boot than this 930!

Best regards,

Michael

The strut won't make it lean - the torsion bars are what set your ride height. Something it probably buggered but it will probably be an easy fix.

Thanks for the info. As soon as I get a chance to get over there I'll snap a bunch of pics.

Ah, yes, torsion bar....I had not even thought about that.
And good call on the vacuum hoses. I think the first order of business will be to drop some oil and refill with fresh and new OF, get it started, let it run for a bit then drop the oil again. Is Mobil 1 still the choice on this board? It used to be what the majority of you boys were using?

Ha! You wonder why the thread died (asking about motor oil). Look for a recent thread with cnavarro (think this is right) wrt the current oils. There is no ubiquitous agreement, I think.

Good luck and welcome back.

You do realize how things like this go don't you? As you make the car better, it's price/value goes up. I would settle on a price now and "land contract" the deal rather than fix it up and pay the higher price later.

Welcome back.
