Is this correct? Bilstein insert for '73 boge strut
 

I've ordered some bilstein inserts for the boge struts on my '73E. Having taken the old insert out (an aftermarket Koni), its obvious that there is either something missing from the new Bilstein strut, or that its the wrong part - theres nothing threaded to hold it into the boge strut. See pic: the red koni insert has the thread at the top of the cylinder, whereas the yellow bilstein one is smooth. The strut itself is definitely stamped as a boge, bearing the part number 911-341-079-04 (left side).

Should the Bilstein have come with an additional separate threaded collar to secure it into the strut?

PS - the strut itself had loads of oil in it - I'm guessing this is from the old Koni insert leaking.. or should that oil be in there anyway?!

Yes there should be gland nut that screws onto the strut and holds the insert in. Mine came with them when I got my inserts. My insert was green, I have a 72 with boge strut. You may have the wrong insert or may need to buy the gland nuts. Hope that is of some help.

Thanks.. sounds like this nut was supposed to be included then. I suspect these shocks have actually been lying around in the stockroom for ages and the nuts have been lost at some point....

The suppliers are actually now swapping these for some adjustable Koni's for me, which they know definitely fit. Would have been nice to use the bilsteins, but I do now like the ldea of exernally adjustable Koni's...

And the oil you found probably did not leak from the old shock. About an ounce of oil is poured into the strut housing before inserting the strut. It allows for heat transfer from the strut to the housing.
