alternator belt

Hi. I have a 1983 911SC..I went to the local porsche dealer and was told the proper belt is 10x715. I went to a local parts store and they told me the same thing so I bought one.

However, I noticed the belt that is on the car and the ones sold by Pelican are 10x710. Will the 10x715 work if I adjust the shims properly...for an emergency at least? or should I just return them and order the 10x710. No one seems to carry a 10x710 in town and has never heard of that size. Im confused. Thanks for any input

Welcome to the board!

Compare the two belts and see how much larger the 10x715 is...there isn't a huge amount of adjustment available...but in a pinch if it looks like it will work give it a try. The downside is that once the belt stretches a little you might not be able to tighten it up anymore.

If the belt starts slipping the alternator light is likely to flicker...and if the belt really stretches, it could get thrown off of the pulley.

If you have the time, order a couple of new ones from our host. (One for the trunk...the one in the tool kit is probably 'vintage' by now)

Good luck with your replacement!

Cheers, Cooper

PS post some pics. of your SC! Again welcome aboard.

Here's a thread that discusses the different sizes (even from Pelican), and Grady offers his usual outstanding advice which sure helped me out some time back.

Pulley Shims, Wrong Config?
