Rust Pit Repair?
I'm an amateur working on an old steel bumper which has some areas of surface rust and pitting. I can grind off the surface rust but the pits are deep and I don't want to take off too much material. I can fill them with Bondo but wonder if they will stick. Is there a treatment for this?

Google is your friend.
Here's an article on bumper restoration. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/howto/68378_bumper_restoration/index1.html

the only way to clean out those pits is by sand blasting. You will grind away too much good metal if you try to grind away all the rust.
If you're gonna re-chrome the bumper just take it to the chrome shop as it is and let them deal with it. The chrome shop probably has some sort of chemical dip to remove the rust. Last edited by moochie; 05-12-2007 at 07:51 AM.. |

At home, sand blast. Take out, acid dip. I don't think you'll be chroming that bumper. Prime it immediately and then use some polyester glazing putty would be my advice.

My thanks to those who have responded but please be aware this is an early longnose bumper and is painted, not chromed.
