Tranny mount problem

Today after some spirited driving I notice that there was a noise coming from the center of the car. It felt like something below the shifter was loose.

After some inspection, I noticed this on my tranny mounts. What could have cause this?

Should I replaced them by solid mounts? Pros and cons?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like maybe you should have had one of these concave washers installed...

I would imagine these do wonders for keeping the rubber from getting torn up by road debris.
