Too few shims... frozen alternator nut
1978 911 SC (just the recommended upgrades, otherwise stock)
Dallas, TX I'm a moron! So I got into too big a hurry and re-installed new alternator with only three shims. Now I've got my alternator nut frozen to the shaft like some other posts I've read. To make matters worse, the pulley's spinning independently of the shaft so I use a hammer/handle to brace the fan while trying to "gently" (yeah right) get the nut off. I tried cutting the belt and using a chain wrench to get a better grip to no avail. Any lessons learned on other ways to get the nut removed, let me know. I also have to find a new fan and pulley. Any suggestions on where I could find these parts used is also greatly appreciated! Geeeeze this f#*%*n sucks!!! |
You may be truly screwed... If the pulley is spinning freely then the key hole has worn or the post has worn or both. I had a similar problem, but the post/hole combination had simply opened up a bit. I used some kind of quick weld goo and then filed it to the correct shape... but its something I'll have to re-do every few years.
In your case... if its spinning free you probably need a new fan and pulley. I hope this is not the case as a new or used fan is not cheap... Best regards, Michael |
try a nut splitter from harbor freight or OSH.

After the chain wrench didn't work, I wanted to try one more approach before using a nut splitter... AND it worked like a charm without causing any damage to anything. I was actually able to slip about four roofing nails through the holes of the pulley and fan which locked them together for me. Then I used the chain wrench to hold the pulley and my 24mm socket to remove the nut and bingo! .... for what it's worth!

Heh, heh.....Bet those roofing nails were right next to the duct tape.....:D

My alt nut and pulley had opened up too.
The shaft part of the fan has a cut in it that will no longer grab the pulley...even a brand new one from our host. I made a "crab" assy that fits over the pulley to take the place of the outer shims and it has 3 pins that fit through the holes in both the pulley and the fan. It keeps the pulley from rotating in relation to the fan, centers it, and tightens it at the same time. My $.02 solution to the problem. Maybe I am the cheapest one here....LOL Bob |
Pretty clever!
