I am in negotiations to buy my first Porsche: a 1987 911 Coupe, and I am concerned that the rims are not stock (reference the picture below). Does anyone know exactly what type of rims these are? How would the values of these compare to the stock forged alloys? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Those look like 17" Cup wheels from a later 911 (964 I think). The 87 should have been delivered with 16" Fuchs. You will need to look at the back side of the wheel to see the manufacturer and part number to verify it is factory issue.

Several companies make the "cup 1" copies. That's what these look like. If they are the originals - then they were factory made for the 964 (1992 and on cars) and have a higher offset (50+mm) To use on the pre 1990 cars you will need a spacer of approximately 1" on the front and 1 1/2" on the rear.
So, if they have spacers - then they "might" be factory wheels - If they do not have spacers - and are of the correct offset - then a good chance they are aftermarket. Either case - they have heavy being cast wheels. - Oh - and the 1987 came standard with 15/7 and 15/8 fuchs - option was the 16" wheels in 6's and 7's.

Thanks for the insight Jeremy. I am interested in how these wheels affect the value of the car, as I am attempting to negotiate a price. The car of interest has 60k miles and the asking price is $23k. All other things being equal, how would say these rims affect the value if they're a) genuine Porsche or b) aftermarket?

They won't affect the price either way. What might affect the price is the fact that the original Fuchs are missing. I believe that in 1987, 16x6 and 16x7 were standard. You may be able to find a nice used set for around $1300-$1500. While this may not sway the seller, it is a negotiating point.
Please get a PPI prior to purchase. The results of the PPI will probably give you more to negotiate about - or you may want to walk altogether. |

The 16" Fuchs was optional in '87, I believe. 6" in front, 7" rear.

Crosby, I am geting a PPI done tomorrow. We'll be completing the negotiations thereafter. I just wanted to make sure I have all my bases covered.
If the PPI is positive, I'll be getting the head studs checked and a leak down test performed. Also, the car is due for a major 60k mile service. I'll definitely be including that in the negotiation as well.
