Oil Press. question

Changed my oil last month but have a question. On full throttle, say going 75mph. the oil pressure guage is up to #5, top. The oil level guage is in the red area, down at the bottom. When I sit at a stop, the pressure drops to about 3, but the oil level goes way up. Any reason for this. Thanks

This is because the oil level sensor is in the oil tank. When you are full throttle the oil is being sucked out of the tank and being sent through the engine and the rest of your cooling system. When you are idling the oil tank fills back up and the guage is reflecting that.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Yes wolf, its pretty basic. The only problem I have is I've owned the car for 3 years, and have changed the oil many times, and have never had this symptom. So, I just got on this site and asked a question. I hope you dont have any problem with that.

What symptom have you had thats different? This sounds like normal except maybe a little high on the oil pressure numbers. Tank readings at other than hot, level, idle are not relevant.

What you described is normal. So, what was it like before you changed your oil? Is it possible you just did not pay much attention to the gauges before you did that oil change?

The oil level gauge is not very accurate and if you insist on reading it, it should only be read when the car is hot, level and idling.

Hope this helps,

George

The only change I've noticed is that the oil level guage is up towards the upper 1/3rd at idle. I maybe didnt fill up the car with enough oil before and it never registered. But now that I hear its normal, I appreciate all the help.

Strupgolf,
You may have put a little more oil in it this time. Check the dipstick to verify that you have the correct amount of oil and you're golden. I hope that I did not come across as condescending in my first post, if I did, I apologize.

No Shawn, no problem. I do think I might have "topped off" the oil a bit too much. These 3.2's are picky on the oil level, never can I figure out exactly what I have or what it wants. Thanks

Top to bottom on the oil level gauge is not quite two quarts if I remember, maybe less. Check the gauge and the dipstick (engine running, warm, idling, level surface for both) and see what agreement you get between the two. My gauge reads a little optimistic (high).
