88 Targa speaker options?
I have an 88 targa, and it appears to have 2 speakers in each door, and two on the rear shelf. If there are any more than that, let me know... I haven't found them yet. I have a Kenwood stereo, with a 600w Rockford Fosgate amp, but the speakers sound like crap. They appear to be OEM. Any help with replacement speaker options would be appreciated. What brand, and sizes for each. Not looking to spend a fortune. I just want some descent sound. I plan on installing a sub box under the pass. seat. Thanks.

It's hard to get good sound out of those little 4x6" rear speakers as there is simply no depth nor air volume under the rear shelf. As these are exposed to lots of sunlight you may want to check to see if the cones have disintegrated from the UV. My door speakers make way more sound, even un-amplified. I have just placed an underseat sub. This, in my opinion, is the single best way to get better all 'round sound in this limited space application. Your choice of speakers will be dictated simply by 3 principles:
1. What fits? 2. How does it sound at the stereo shop? 3. How much do I want to spend? Rock on!

Car Audio Innovations makes an awesome sub enclosure for the 911's. Mine fits great and the 10's are great sounding. Put some Focal door speakers in with a nice head unit and if feels like you have headphones on......

my 4x6 sony's in back sound OK, they are a bit older. I think Boston Acoustics and Infinity make that size also. They may be able to take more power? I used the stock size 5.25 in the door to put some three ways in. I really don't listen to the music that much though...

Here is a great thread on door speakers. Here
With the 'extender' it is easy to mount 6.5" speakers without cutting steel. I'm just starting this project using the template in the post. I'm putting Focal Polyglass components in the door & dual 8" Focal subs in an homespun mdf enclosure (or mock enclosure actually) in the rear footwell. Ian

You can use smaller speakers (4X6 in the rear and 5 1/2 in doors)if you have a sub and amp. Even a small sub (8 ") behind the drivers seat on the floor makes an incredible difference in sound quality as the four speakers provide surround sound the sub kicks in the bass. Also, my rear 4X6 Infinity speakers are mounted facing the front with a fibreglass enclosure...
