Want GPS/ Nav for *only* European application
 

Not getting a whole lot of traction on this question so I'm cross-posting the same thread from OT...(or maybe I'm just dense)....but has anyone BTDT in buying a Euro-only unit ?

The main problem you will have Wil is that a lot of the GPS suppliers in the low range here in Europe are county specific. So you only get the local country map and then have to pay BIG for the map covering the rest of Europe.

If you do purchase a European GPS, make sure you investigate the Europe map function properly - I got hit on that! I bought a low end unit that advertised that it had all Europe maps loaded. But when I started to use it I hit two problems.

1) It would only hold one country in memory at a time, so if you wanted to navigate from Sweden to Spain, you had to set it from border to border and not Sweden to Spain in one trip.

2) It did not contain full maps for some of the European countries on the edge such as Finland, which again for me was not so good - got very lost in Finland :(

Don't hesitate to buy a high end product like t**t*m.
Especially the 710 for whole Europe or 910 so you also have the US.

Quite expensive but worth it.

Thanks for all the replies. With info from this board ( both OT and here on 911 board)...as well as research on my own... I think I will gravitate toward the Garmin products ( Tomtom seems to have miserable after-sales support and sometimes the unit itself seems to fail, although direct replacements tend to work, plus they have lousy suction cup attachment designs).

The up-charge of $300 or so ( new, non Ebay price) for Euro maps on top of a basic unit cost of $200-$300 for a US mapped unit.... makes the street price of a Garmin Nuvi 270 ( $430-$460) or the 370 ( $550-600) seem more favorable.

My new dilemma....the 270 or the 370 ???

Wil, the Garmin 660 or 670 Will cover all of Europe down to post codes.
I use one, they are the dog's wobbly bites.

SLR...thanks for the reference ...but 660 and 670 are more $ than either the 270 0r 370, which also have the Euro capability...

I run TT Nav 5 on my iPaq with a bluetooth GPS, great versatility and TT5 comes with a full portfolio of Euro maps. Have been using it years, no probs and full speed camera database also.
