remove rear quarter windows
Hi there, I'm installing pop outs and have looked at several links showing how to install, but not how to remove the old fixed windows.
I realize this is a bit of a noob question but don't want to screw up any molding I might need later and/or might need to go with the sale of the fixed windows. So other than the interior plastic trim to be removed, what exactly is holding the window in the body? Many tia. Jack ![]() ![]()

The rubber seal. Search rear window instal and from the pictures you will see. If you don't want to re-use the seal just cut the rubber away from the inside.
If you want to save your seals you need to gently work the rubber away from the body and pop the window to the outside.

The window seal itself holds the window in place. The most popular method is to cut away the lower seal inside and push gently out from the bottom. You will need the lower pop-out window trim piece and some u-shaped channel trim to finish the new window. The u-shaped trim is still available from Porsche and is pretty cheap. The part numbers ore on the picture.

I just did this job, and I'm damned if I could pop them out, even lying inside the car and pushing against the glass with my feet. I had to cut the seals

Ditto -
It has always been a mystery to me how paint shops reuse existing seals without damage...side windows, front or back, removal for me has always required pulling out the blade and cutting. It has to take more time and 9 times out of 10 it is not their nickle, why not just spec out a new seal vs wrangling with the old one. In any event I would say that 10 years is about the useful limit of the rubber anyway...

Well, the windshield's another thing...I've inadvertently pushed mine loose suction-cupping a Valentine in place. No problem getting that puppy out.

thanks guys. got the window out now figuring out the b pillar situation. I couldn't easily see what the deal was from the pictures until I peeled back the interior piece.
here's the best of the 3 threads I found: Fixed rear quarter window?

Ok, now I'm mentally stuck on a couple of things:
1. apparently i need to cut away the leading "u" channel which probably covers slots into which I put the tabs then bolt on to the b pillar--right? 2. look at the pic--it appears I'm missing the hinges, right? or do the tabs suffice? I can see how they'd bend at all (leading part of window) thanks...Jack ![]()

the mounting flanges are the hinges. When mounted, the windows don't move much! It's a practical system.

adam(9)12 (I get it, btw, which shows my age):
So the edge on the b pillar the hinge is resting on in the image above is what needs to come off, right? Just want to make double-dog sure before I start cutting. thanks. J

I don't know about this edge...my '66 came with the moving quarter windows installed, so I have no reference point on modifications. Sorry!
I would be willing to take pics of how mine fits if that would help, though... cheers Adam |

I have mine apart (73), so here are some quick pictures of how the pop outs mount on the older cars. Notice that the extra channel on the outside is not there. The little tabs extend into the slots in the B pillar and contain the threads for the window mounting bolts. In the cited post, I think Arcsine said that his weren't threaded, but the tabs and slots were there. ![]() ![]() Notice that the window tabs slide into the B pillar behind (towards the rear of the car) the body tabs. ![]() ![]() The rubber "u" trim just presses onto the flange ![]() Good Luck Joe

Hey Joe, thanks a lot. I have pix of the b pillar without the channel--I hacked it off and will post a step by step when I do the other side.
Very good pix of your 73-my SC does not, however, have the tabs extending from the pillar which doesn't seem to matter. Jack

Question, and the other threads on the pop out topic don't answer it for me:
The pre-drilled holes for both the latch and the b pillar don't work with the screws that came off the old vehicle. I can drill the b pillar holes a bit (which aren't threaded) and find some screws but on the c pillar the holes are considerably larger than what will work with the holes in the latch. Reading a thread mentioned "nut serts", which I'm thinking are inserts into the holes into which the screw goes--right? If I want to buy nut serts, what is the proper name so I can find them in the hw store? thanks

Holtjv;
I am watching and reading this thread intently as I am about to undertake the same process; the former owner of my '74 Coupe removed the pop-outs and installed fixed rear quarter glass. I found the best selection of diagrams and parts are available from DC Automotive (Link below). After purchasing the basic windows and rubber seals from a fellow Pelicanite I got all the screws and small parts from DC Automotive. I have all of the parts collected but since my car formerly had the pop-outs I did not need the insert nuts you are looking for. DC Automotive is certainly not the cheapest but they do have the parts we are looking for. Their shipping is somewhat bloated also. I guess some companies simply can't resist using shipping as a profit center. Good luck and post lots of pictures. Your thread has been an invaluable help. Ventana http://www.dcauto.com/

Sort of bad news in that my camera was lent out over the weekend. i've taken some pix with my cameraphone the but quality is lacking.
while I'm waiting for the hw store to open (lowe's had nothing i needed) I removed the other window and b pillar strip all in about 20 minutes and much cleaner than the other side. stay tuned...

as a teaser to the full writeup, and preview of how crappy the rez is going to be on the pix, here's a shot of the b pillar strip that needs to come off.
