motor meister???
here i am looking at this really nice '72e targa on the ebay when i notice the words"rebuilt by motor meister" proudly displayed in the ad. all of a sudden my heart sank. then i thought that even motor meister must have some happy customers. does anyone have anything nice to say about them? the car is in los angeles. i had heard that some of roys local customers get pretty good stuff.
other than the engine by mm the car looks pretty good from the top. i am waiting to see if he will send me some shots of the bottom. |

I suspect that 95% of the opinions here regarding MM will be "run, don't walk" YMMV......

i had an engine rebuilt by them.
then i heard the rumours so i tore it all apart and checked everything out... it was exactly as they said it was... a 2.7L pushed out to accept 95mm cyclinders and JE pistons, with the euro fuel head, raceware connecting hardware, SSI's, s-cam.... it was a decent engine, though the journal shafts did show some unsual ware (used?), and the cam was slightly pitted... the engine IMO also looked very nice, dripped very little oil if any, had a nice fan/valve covers/engine shroud with cleaning ran wires.... i am not speaking good on them, as it took almost 8 months longer then they said it would, and we had to go visit them in person to finally get it done.... but maybe, maybe they can get lucky an assemble a working engine???

I have a race engine that MM built in 1998. It's a 2.7 that was built to be competititve in GT4 (PCA Racing). GT4 has alas, passed me by. The engine, on the other hand remains very strong and has the capability of udhing my brick-like 914 to 150mph. MM built what I asked, on time, and on budget.
What's this, 2007? I campaigned that engine all over the east coast before coming back to San Diego. I have absolutely no complaints about what they did for me. Others here, apparently did not have that same experience. There are few with actual experience here, others use hearsay and "My friend's third cousin said. . ." stories to pile on. As always, "Buyer Beware."

8+ months on an engine rebuild? Who would ever wait that long? My mechanic rebuilds porsche engines in his garage in 2 weeks, and he's 65.

Don,
Glad you've had good luck. But the reality is that MotorMeister has been the subject of more negative responses than any other shop I've even remotely heard of. There is no close second. The "even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally" saying comes to mind. Given the agreed upon history of MM on a board like this which is devoted ONLY to Porsche 911's, why would anyone ever chance sending their work there? When it comes to opinions, not many of us agree here on much of anything....EXCEPT do NOT send your engine to MM. But even if EVERY negative post about them is dead wrong (fat chance) why would you take the chance and what if you ever wanted to sell the car? Almost universally, no one with a shred of Porsche knowledge would buy the car with that engine in it. You may truly not like that this is the case and I do not doubt your honesty in saying you've had good luck. I just would never advise anyone else to take a chance with them.
