Bilstein strut questions
 

Hi folks, I have a couple of basic questions on Bilstein struts for my 911. I have lots of experience with Konis in both my cars, but I've never worked with Bilsteins. I just bought a set of Bilstein struts at Hershey with the intentions of making them into RSR spec. They are part numbers:
911-341-041-32 dated 10-81 and
911-341-042-32 dated 08-80
I am used to the gland nut to retain the insert into the housing on the Koni. I gather these inserts are released by removing the roll pin that I can see near the base of the housing? What is the larger diameter ring at the top inch or two of the housing for? Is it removable? Could coil springs fit over this ring if I were to go coil-over? When people speak of revalving Bilsteins, are they truely revalving the insert I have or is it simply replacing the insert entirely? If it is a true revalve, can any other worn parts be renewed? Any other tricks I should know? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Peter:

1. You're right, the roll pin secures the shock insert into the strut housing

2. That top ring holds the bushing/bearing just inside the top of the strut tube. This is what the shock cartridge slides against and when these get worn, you have a "variable camber " strut,...:) Yes,...its replaceable.

3. Revalving these involves changing the stack inside the insert and replacing any worn parts. Sometimes, we have the inserts shortened, too.


If you wish to use coil springs, you will need to thread the OD of the housings. Raised spindles are HIGHLY recommended, as well.
