Rev disturbance @ ~5200 and dying at idle

Okay, a couple of questions: Just got back from a drive and noticed once again that around 5200 rpm there is a disturbance (i guess) where the rpms shutter and become rough. I was on 35 mph roads so i couldnt take it much higher than that (cops everywhere). I am running PMO carbs on a 72 S (MFI in a box in the basement...dont worry). Whats the problem?

Also, after cruising at 3500 rpm or higher and coming to a stop to park or at a light/stop sign, the rpms drop and engine dies and the red light comes on. Sometimes it doesnt do this but it always close enough that I end up having to brake with my left foot and keep the idle up with my right (once out of gear). When not moving and the car is warm, it idles pretty nicely at ~800 rpm although it intermittently drops a little low only to come back up. Is this just a simple idle adjustment fix or something more? Any help is appreciated.

Brian

The idle jets are the smallest port through which the fuel must flow.
I would pull them out and check all of them for any blockage.
If they are blocked, blow them out carefully.
Then remove the screw that covers the mid range ports. Clean as necessary.
Next replace the fuel filters, then cut open the old ones to see for sure how they look.
Crap from these old fuel tanks is common.
If you find much dirt you may want to clean the fuel tank and clean the carbs.

Sorry, no wisdom there. There are too many variables. Where do you live in VT? You're welcome to come down and tinker. I'm in NE CT. I have a pretty complete garage. DC
